The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and fosters innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research campuses and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa. 
 
The ARC-Natural Resources and Engineering (ARC-NRE) seeks to appoint suitable and dynamic persons to the following positions in Arcadia. 
 
“SOIL SPECTROSCOPY” CONTRACTORS X 2 
(12 MONTHS FIXED TERM CONTRACT) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Knowledge of soil sample collection. 
 Knowledge of soil analytical practices and procedures. 
 Knowledge of soil /crop science principles. 
 Ability to work thoroughly, consistently, and reliably. 
 Computer literacy would be an advantage. 
 
Requirements: 
Applicants should be highly motivated graduates with a strong academic background (e.g. class Honours and Masters) in Soil Science, Soil Spectroscopy, Data Analysis, Mathematics, Physics, or similar quantitative fields. Programming experience (or willingness to learn) with R or a similar language will be an advantage as well as possession of a driver’s license.

The ARC-Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC–VIMP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat (Pretoria): 
 
RE- ADVERT SENIOR RESEARCHER: AGRONOMY (OTHER ECONOMIC PLANTS) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
Initiates and manages/contributes towards research projects on economic plants including essential oil plants and industrial plants. 
Conducts specific research with clear focus on propagation and cultivation of economic plants including essential oil plants and industrial plants. 
Actively sources and secures new research opportunities and funding. 
Capable of securing externally funded projects. 
Compiles and contributes to progress reports (internal and external). 
Captures analyses and interprets data. 
Provides leadership, supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students, research technicians and assistants. 
Human resources management to ensure efficient deployment and utilisation, setting objective assessment and training. 
Disseminates technology through peer-reviewed scientific articles, popular publications, manual production, radio and TV talks, etc. 
Initiates and collaborates with national and international organisation. 
Trains postgraduate students and technical personnel in the use of specialised equipment/instruments and associated software. 
Compliance with human resource policies and procedures. 
Compliance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures. 
 
Requirements: 
PhD in Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Production, Botany, Horticulture, or closely related field 
Minimum of 5 years relevant experience and 8 relevant peer reviewed publications. 
Demonstrable experience in external income generation related to economic plants (including essential oil and industrial plants) propagation and cultivation R&D is an added advantage. 
Good communication skills (verbal and written). 
Proficiency in MS Office suite. 
Valid driver’s license. 
Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage. 
Agricultural Research knowledge and skills. 
Extensive knowledge of medicinal plant production. 
Knowledge of intellectual property opportunities. 
Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures.

Key Performance Areas: 
 Initiates and manages/contributes towards plant breeding research projects on medicinal and industrial plants. 
 Conducts specific research with clear focus on breeding of medicinal and industrial plants. 
 Acquire, utilise, and maintain germplasms, and develop elite breeding lines. 
 Develop and register elite hybrids, secure Plant Breeder’s Rights, and actively promote their commercialisation. 
 Actively sources and secures new research opportunities and funding. 
 Compiles and contributes to progress reports (internal and external). 
 Captures, analyses, and interprets data. 
 Provides leadership, supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students, research technicians and assistants. 
 Human resources management to ensure efficient deployment and utilisation, setting objective assessment and training. 
 Disseminates technology through peer-reviewed scientific articles, popular publications, manual production, radio, and TV talks, etc. Initiates and collaborates with national and international organisation.

 Management skills including research project management.

 Conducts specific research with clear focus on agronomy and development of low-cost production systems. 
 Actively sources and secures new research opportunities and funding (Capable of securing externally funded projects). 
 Knowledge and experience in crop modelling, precision agriculture and efficacy studies on agricultural inputs are differentiating qualities. 
 Compiles and contributes to progress reports (internal and external). 
 Captures, analyses, and interprets data. 
 Provides leadership, supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students, researchers, research technicians and assistants. 
 Human resources management to ensure efficient deployment and utilisation, setting objective assessment and training. 
 Disseminates technology through peer-reviewed scientific articles, popular publications, manual production, radio and TV talks, etc, 
 Initiates and collaborates with national and international organisation.
