RESEARCHER: CROP PROTECTION PATHOLOGY (RE-ADVERT)
Key Performance Areas:
• Initiates, manages, and contributes towards national projects.
• Identifies the need for human resources in projects and manages the allocated resources.
• Is accountable for compiling and managing the project budget.
• Actively sources new national research opportunities and writes proposals.

Requirements:
• PhD in Plant Pathology (Epidemiology/ Fungal Molecular Biology and Genetics / Plant Biochemistry) or MSc with 5 years’ work experience and 5 Scientific Publications.
• Experience in epidemiology, molecular biology and plant biochemistry in grain crops.
• National scientific recognition will be an added advantage.

Ensure that all vehicles are serviced, maintained and in excellent mechanical condition.
.Perform the daily allocation of vehicles and accurately administer on the transport system.
Control the procurement function Opex and Capex related to fleet.
Processing of log sheets.
Manage the transport budget and authorize the repair and maintenance of vehicles.
Be responsible for short-, medium- and long-term planning of the fleet.

The ARC-Biotechnology Platform (ARC–BTP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Onderstepoort, Pretoria:
SENIOR RESEARCHER: PLANT GENOMICS (RE-ADVERTISEMENT)
Key Performance Areas:
Lead research programs that will undertake support and research activities in areas such as statistical and structural genomics, next generation sequencing, transcriptomic, quantitative and association genetics and molecular modelling in agricultural plants within the mandate of the ARC.
Collaborate and interact with research teams across ARC to ensure broad application of genomics and statistical genomics tools in crop research programs of the ARC.
Expand and or develop new skills and technologies in genomics in line with the needs of ARC crop research programs.
Supervise postgraduate students in advanced Plant Genomics.
Raise funds to ensure the optimal functioning of the Biotechnology Platform and research program at the cutting edge of available technologies.
Requirements:
PhD in Plant Genetics/Genomics or related field.
5 year’s post PhD experience or postdoctoral, research experience.
Ability to manage a research team or research programs.
Ability to supervise postgraduate students as demonstrated by a good track record of student supervision.
Appropriate track record of publication in research journals and recognition within the research community.
Experience in project management and resource mobilisation inclusive of fund raising.
APPLICATION SPECIALIST: BIOINFORMATICS
Key Performance Areas:
Support the operation of the Bioinformatics unit within the Biotechnology Platform.
Manage the computational environment of the Biotechnology Platform in terms of an open platform and open-source strategy.
Develop and optimise bioinformatics and data analysis pipelines for next generation sequencing, long read sequencing and genotyping data for diverse projects within the mandate of the ARC with special emphasis on precision and turnaround time.
Provide bioinformatics training and workshops.
Provide support for systems management, programming, scripting and database management and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) to users of the Bioinformatics Unit.
Implement and maintain the LIMS, database and other ICT support needed by the Biotechnology research and core facilities units.
Requirements:
MSc in Bioinformatics/ MSc in Genomics, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or related field.
2 - 3 years’ experience in bioinformatics programming.
Demonstrate programming and scripting skills.
Ability to develop and work with databases (e.g. SQL).
Knowledge/experience working with next generation sequencing, long read sequencing and/or genotyping data will be an advantage.
Experience working in a core facility environment and ability to interact with clients will be an advantage.
Knowledge and experience in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) will be an advantage.
APPLICATION SPECIALIST: GENOMICS
Key Performance Areas:
Conduct genomics services as part of the Biotechnology Platform Core team. Predominantly next generation sequencing (NGS) and long read sequencing, but also genotyping and high-throughput DNA extraction services as the need arises.
Receive, track and quality control of samples, sample preparation and data delivery to clients. Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment and their servicing records.
Develop and implement a program to optimise workflows with focus on quality, efficiency and cost.
Optimise and establish new high throughput technologies in line with developments for the BTP.
Develop and implement the use of Standard Operating Procedures.
Conduct training of genomics technologies to students and external clients.
Coordinate client workflows to ensure short turnaround times, efficient data dissemination and client invoicing.
Generate and manage client quotations, purchase orders, invoices and certificates of conformance and ensure they are properly catalogued for monthly and quarterly reporting.
Monthly inventory and purchasing of consumables and reagents according to procurement procedures.
Requirements:
MSc in Genomics, Genetics, Molecular Biology or related field.
2 - 3 years ‘wet lab’ experience (e.g. working in a molecular/ analytical/ clinical/ similar laboratory),
Experience with genomics technologies, especially next generation sequencing and/or long read sequencing, will be advantageous.
Experience operating and programming automated liquid handling robotics will be advantageous.
Demonstration of skills in project management will be advantageous.
Ability to interact with clients in a collaborative and consultative role and working as part of a team will be an advantage.
Knowledge and experience in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) will be an advantage.
