The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa. 
 
The ARC- Grain Crops (ARC-GC) seeks to appoint Post-Doctoral Fellow to work on a new project funded by Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development based at Potchefstroom. 
 
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW: (PLANT BREEDING) X2 
(THREE (3) YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
  • Manages people within projects and ensures optimal utilisation. 
  • Assists the researcher to compile and manage project budgets. 
  • Assist to plan and co-ordinate technical projects. 
  • Utilises project facilities, materials, and equipment. 
  • Ensures optimal utilization of resources. 
  • Strategic planning of future resources. 
  • Independently conducts specialist research/technical support, diagnostics, and other services across projects. 
  • Ensures compliance to quality standards. 
  • Renders expert diagnostic, technical and other services and consults at a national /international level. 
  • Assists in intellectual property developments. 
  • Assists to identify and pursue new business opportunities and projects. 
  • Contributes to scientific and popular publications. 
  • Ensures compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures. 
  • Assists to develop technical capacity at an appropriate level. 
  • Identifies learning opportunities of sub-ordinates. 
 
Requirements: 
  • PhD in Plant Breeding / Molecular Breeding / Genetics with Plant Breeding as a Major. 
  • Valid driver’s license will be an added advantage.

The ARC- Biotechnology Platform (ARC-OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic person to the following position at Onderstepoort, Pretoria. 
 
RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: EPV 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
Diagnostics
  • Processing and analysis of diagnostic samples and reporting thereof. 
  • Perform Mc Master Faecal Egg Count and Pitchford/Visser Trematode Egg Count and calculate eggs per gram of faeces. 
  • Identification of common eggs of ruminants. 
  • Perform calculations for FERT, EPG, reagent preparation. 
  • Larval identification techniques. 
  • Identification of common nematode, trematode and cestode parasites of companion and farm animals to genus level. 
  • Staining and mounting of helminth samples. 
  • Recording and processing of diagnostic results on LabWare on the level of sample reception and technician. 
 
Research
  • Assistance on field trips (post-mortem collection of samples, recording of data). 
  • Helminth recovery from organs and ingesta, identification and counting. 
  • Animal handling: bleeding of animals, taking temperature, collection of faecal samples. 
  • DNA extraction. 
  • Set up conventional Polymerase Chain Reaction. 
  • Perform electrophoresis, read, and record results. 
 
National Collection of Animal Helminths 
  • Collections maintenance: routine checking of ethanol levels and concentrations and taking required corrective actions. 
  • Assist with accessioning specimens into the collection. 
  • Assist with data management: entering of specimen data on Specify data base. 
  • Assist with training courses and scientific visitors. 
 
Administration
  • Stock taking of materials and reagents needed and placing orders following SCM procedures. 
  • Responsible for housekeeping duties such as recording of fridge temperatures, quality control and maintenance of apparatus. 
 
Requirements: 
  • National Diploma in Veterinary Technology / BTech in Veterinary Technology / BHSc (Veterinary Technology). 
  • Must be registered with the SAVC. 
  • Three (3) years’ experience working in a Veterinary Laboratory will be an added advantage. 
  • Proficiency In Ms Office suite. 
  • Effective verbal and electronic communication skills.
