The ARC- Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC– VIMP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Roodeplaat, Pretoria:
RESEARCHER: AGRONOMY- MEDICINAL PLANTS (RE-ADVERTISEMENT)
Salary (R479 695 – R719 514 pa) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Initiates and manages and contributes towards national agronomic research projects on medicinal plants,
Actively sources and secures new research opportunities and funding, and writes winning proposals,
Capable of securing externally funded projects,
Compiles and contributes to progress reports internal and external,
Captures, analyses and interprets data,
Provides leadership, supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students, research technicians and assistants,
Human resources management to ensure efficient deployment and utilisation, setting objective assessment and training,
Disseminates technology through peer reviewed scientific articles, popular publications, manual production, radio and TV talks, etc,
Plans and coordinates research with single or multi-disciplinary team,
Actively seeks networking opportunities (e.g. attends scientific gatherings, working with farmer communities, etc.),
Compliance with human resource policies and procedures,
Compliance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
Requirements:
PhD in Agronomy, Horticulture, Agricultural Science or closely-related field,
Evidence of substantial publications in ISI-rated scientific journals related to agronomy,
Evidence of popular article publications will be an added advantage,
Demonstrable experience in project management,
Postgraduate student mentoring or supervision experience,
Registration with a relevant scientific registration body, where applicable,
Management skills including research project management,
Good communication verbal & writing skills,
Agricultural Research knowledge and skills,
Extensive knowledge of medicinal plant production systems,
Proficiency in MS Office suite,
Ability to render diagnostic, technical and other services at national level,
Knowledge of intellectual property opportunities,
Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures,

RESEARCHER: GERMPLASM BANK CURATOR RE-ADVERT

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Managing and curating the ARC-Small Grain Germplasm Bank and database (GRIN-Global) as well as the ARC-GC Germplasm Bank and database,
Providing scientific assistance for large (maize, sunflower, peanut, soybean, cowpeas, sorghum) and small grain (wheat, barley, oats, rye) collections, plant breeders and plant pathologists,
Ensuring compliance with regards to relevant legislation, both national and international such as importation and exportation of nurseries/breeding lines/cultivars,
Ensuring the daily running of the Germplasm Banks (planting/maintaining/harvesting of trials and long-term storage of germplasm),
Management of Germplasm Banks’ technical staff and interns,
Contributing to the Biodiversity germplasm banks of South Africa’s objectives, specifically for grain germplasm banks,
Compiling technical reports,
Requirements:
• PhD in Plant breeding/ Genetics,
• Proven record of national and internal scientific outputs,
• A good analytical, drafting, communication, and interpersonal skills,
• The ability to work well under pressure and prioritise competing demands,
• Proficiency MS office suite
• Experience of working in a research team,
• Valid driver’s license,
• Knowledge in Database management,
• Knowledge of germplasm bank management and preparation,

Key Performance Areas:
Assist to identify adaptive or new research needs (needs analysis) in line with the grain industries in SA,
Conducts independent research under the supervision of nationally and internationally renowned senior/specialist/principal researchers,
Identifies and pursues strategic research collaboration opportunities on small grains,
Involvement in project conception, initiation, and planning,
Collaborate and interact with research teams across ARC and universities to ensure broad application of genomics and “omics’ technologies for crop improvement,
Assist in supervising postgraduate students in advanced Plant Genomics and Genetics.
Requirements:
• A PhD in Crop Sciences/Plant Breeding and Genetics/Genomics, Molecular Biology or related field,
• Must be within less than 5 years post PhD completion,

GROUP COMPANY SECRETARY - (Five (5) years fixed-term contract)

Key Performance Areas:
Provide guidance and advice to the board their duties, responsibilities, powers and matters of procedure in terms of the Board Charter, terms of reference, principles of good ethics, good governance, and best practices,
Assist the Board and its subcommittees with interpretation of applicable legislation relevant to or affecting the organization and implications for noncompliance with such applicable statutory requirements,
Monitor compliance to execution of duties in line with the delegation of authorities,
Key role in preparing the reports for the Annual Report and ensuring that relevant deadlines are met and appropriate statutory disclosures be made,
Has the duty to maintain confidentiality on information obtained during the scope of his duties,
Responsible for ensuring safe custody of contracts and agreements and the monitoring of same,

Record any declaration made by members and Executive Management on any material interests in any contract of the organization,
Ensure instructions and determine procedures of handling queries and requests from the shareholder and the Board on governance issues, and provide regular feedback,
Develop standard feedback questionnaire to measure customer satisfaction and ensure correct service delivery measured by a monitoring system,
Manage the budget of the corporate governance structures,
Develop the annual Corporate Calendar with the Chairperson of the Board and the Chief Executive Officer.
Requirements:
LLB or equivalent legal qualification,
At least 10 years’ experience in a Board / Company Secretary role, preferably within a state entity,
Chartered Governance Institute of Southern Africa qualification will be an added advantage,
Exceptional company secretarial and administration skills.
Good knowledge of corporate governance and compliance prescripts and relevant legislation, including public sector legislation.
