RESEARCH ASSISTANT - RANGE AND FORAGE SCIENCES (HERBARIUM)
Key Performance Areas:
- Assist with implementation and maintenance of nursery, glasshouse, tunnels, net house and seed. Germination research trials at the National Forage
- Genebank – Roodeplaat.
- Irrigation and preparation of small plots for seed regeneration.
- Assist with characterisation of plant genetic resources at the NFG.
- Assist with seed collection, cleaning and packaging activities at the NFG.
- Assist with collection, mounting and maintenance of voucher specimens at the
- Herbarium facility at Roodeplaat.
- Assist in rangeland ecology related data collection activities.
- Assist with data collection and capturing.
- Assist with seed germination, seedling evaluation and production trials in the seed lab, tunnels, field plots and on farm.
Requirements:
- A Grade 12 with 3 years relevant experience or Grade 10 with 8 years relevant experience or 20 years relevant work experience and focus on planted pasture, botany, or rangeland ecology.
- Practical experience with cultivar lab, tunnels and glasshouses), and field (small plot) conditions.
- Practical experience in seed germination ecology of legumes and/or grasses.
- Knowledge on seed dormancy and various techniques in breaking seed dormancy.
- Must have a valid driver’s licence (or leaners licence as indication that the candidate is in the process of obtaining driver’s licence.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT- RANGE AND FORAGE SCIENCES
Key Performance Areas:
- Manage Roodeplaat herbarium & National Forage Genebank, equipment and infrastructure.
- Assist with collection, mounting and maintenance of voucher specimens at the Herbarium facility at ARC-AP Roodeplaat herbarium.
- Assist with general data collection and capturing – Range & Forage Sciences.
- Attend to physical curation of preserved plant specimen.
- Assist with data collection and capturing digitization process by adding information and images to the herbarium database.
- Assist researchers, technicians, and students with plant species identifications.
- Training of researchers, technicians, students and stakeholders on herbarium operations.
- Assist with procurement process of research equipment and research consumables for the herbarium.
- Ensure that occupational health and safety of the Herbarium is adhered to.
Requirements:
- A Grade 12 with 3 years relevant experience or Grade 10 with 8 years relevant experience or 20 years relevant work experience and focus in botany, biology or Agriculture.
- Experience in the use of herbarium database software will be an added advantage.
- Experience in plant species identification, plant collection and herbarium techniques.
- Exceptional accuracy with capturing data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent planning, organising, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Knowledge on veld condition assessment techniques will be an added advantage.
- Must have a valid driver’s licence (or leaners licence as indication that the candidate is in the process of obtaining driver’s licence).

The ARC- Grain Crops (ARC-GC) seeks to appoint Post-Doctoral Fellow, PhD Student, and Intern: Postgraduate Hons Student to work on a new project funded by Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development at Potchefstroom.
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW: (AGRONOMY)
(THREE (3) YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT)

- Consistently deliver high quality, relevant research.
- Contributes to high quality research outputs and achievement of projects milestones.

PHD STUDENT: (AGRONOMY)

- Undertake PhD studies for three years in Agronomy, agrometeorology, plant sciences.
- Provides research support to Agronomy research projects as the affiliated postgraduate student.
- Engages with relevant stakeholders within affiliated research projects.
- Disseminate project results through, scientific or popular publications, conferences and peer reviewed publications.

Requirements:
- MSc in Agronomy, agrometeorology, plant sciences or other related fields.
- Demonstrated capacity to conduct research at postgraduate level.

Key Performance Areas:
- Together with Project Manager, co-ordinates and contributes towards projects, by compiling and executing technical project activity plans for field trials.
- Collects, capture, process, interprets technical data, and makes internal projects recommendations.
- Compiles detailed technical reports and submits for approval.
- Manages and ensures compliance to qualify standards.
- Optimises equipment and/or processes and/or system.

Requirements:
- BSc/BTech degree in Agronomy, agrometeorology, plant sciences or related fields.

The ARC- Plant Health and Protection (ARC-PHP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat, Pretoria.
RESEARCH TEAM MANAGER – PLANT PATHOLOGY AND PLANT MICROBIOLOGY (RE-ADVERT)
Key Performance Areas:
- Responsible for strategic planning, drafting of business plan and reporting on progress to Institute, corporate and funders.
- Ensure effective technology transfer through scientific and popular publications, lectures, seminars and congresses.
- Leadership on project management and co-ordination.
- Ensure focus of projects are in line with ARC goals and strategic imperatives as well as needs and requirements of the funders.
- Resource management - guidance and financial control of project budget planning and utilization as well as leading the team on the acquisition of funds from several sources.
- Team management including planning, recruitment, appointment, utilization, training, motivation, and performance evaluation of personnel in the section.
- Planning and coordinating the infrastructure requirements, maintenance, and capital needs of the team to enable effective execution of the research plan.
- Identification of shortcomings in existing equipment and infrastructure, and development of solutions.
- Technology transfer - planning, training and guidance of team members in effective technology transfer.
- Reporting to the external funders annually and screening of all manuscripts and related information and publications.
- Scientific and innovation status – meet requirements of scientific publication (contribution of at least 2 articles per year).
Requirements:
- PhD and a minimum of eight (8) years post qualification experience in the field of crop protection or plant and soil health or plant pathology or biotechnology or plant breeding, crop or plant production and related fields.
- Operational and strategic management of multidisciplinary, cross-cutting, and multi-dimensional research projects (initiation, planning and execution).
- Proven experience in project, financial and personnel management.
- Capability for team management, partnership development and collaboration.
- Proven experience in networking with national and international clients and stakeholders.
- SACNASP registration and/or NRF rating.
- Track record of all peer reviewed publications.
- Track record of obtaining research funding.
- A Code B Or EB driver’s license.
