The ARC- Vegetables, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC-VIMP) seeks to appoint a highly experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions at Roodeplaat, Pretoria:
RESEARCH TECHNICIAN – ROOTS, TUBERS AND BULBS - (THREE YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT)
Salary (R247 537 – R371 307 pa) all- inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Contributes towards projects,
Coordinating of work activities and supervises allocated HR resources,
Adheres to financial administrative controls. Assists with compiling project budgets and purchases,
Plans own work activities according to project plans,
Utilises and maintains own facilities, material, and equipment,
Conducts research support, diagnostics, and other services,
Collects, captures, and processes data with basic analysis.
Provides verbal/written reports on work activities and results,

Requirements:

SENIOR RESEARCHER - AGRONOMY
Salary (R586 283 537 – R 879 422 pa) all- inclusive remuneration package
Initiates and manages/contributes towards research projects on root, tuber and bulbous crops,
Conducts specific research with clear focus on agronomy and development of low-cost production systems,
Actively sources and secures new research opportunities and funding (Capable of securing externally funded projects),
Knowledge and experience in crop modelling, precision agriculture and efficacy studies on agricultural inputs are differentiating qualities,
Compiles and contributes to progress reports (internal and external),
Captures, analyses and interprets data,
Provides leadership, supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students, researchers, research technicians and assistants,
Human resources management to ensure efficient deployment and utilisation, setting objective assessment and training,
Disseminates technology through peer-reviewed scientific articles, popular publications, manual production, radio and TV talks, etc,
Initiates and collaborates with national and international organisation,

Requirements:
PhD in Agronomy, Crop Science, Plant Production, Botany, Horticulture, or closely related field,
Minimum 5 years relevant experience and 8 relevant peer reviewed publications,
Demonstrable experience in external income generation - root, tuber and bulbous crops related R&D experience is an added advantage,
Good communication skills (verbal and written),
Proficiency in Ms Office Suite,

RESEARCHER – PLANT BREEDING; PLACE OF WORK - LOSKOP EXPERIMENTAL STATION
(THREE YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT)
Salary (R 479 675 – R 719 514 pa) all- inclusive remuneration package
Initiates and manages national breeding research projects on root and tuber crops
Works as a link between the Root crops research division of the institute and the Loskop Experimental Station on all plant breeding projects and trials
Good knowledge of experimental design and trial management for plant breeding projects is mandatory
Actively sources and secures new research opportunities and funding and writes winning proposals
Capable of securing externally funded projects
Compiles and contributes to progress reports (internal and external)
Captures, analyses and interprets data
Provides leadership, supervision and mentoring of postgraduate students, research technicians and assistants
Human resources management to ensure efficient deployment and utilisation, setting objective assessment and training

Requirements:
PhD in Plant Breeding and/or genetics; OR an MSc in these fields with minimum of five-year experience in plant breeding set up post MSc,
Experience with breeding of root, tuber and bulbous (RTB) crops will be an added advantage,
Evidence of publications on breeding in ISI-rated scientific journals,
Demonstrable experience in project management,
Registration with a relevant scientific registration body, where applicable,
Management skills including research project management,
Good communication (verbal & writing) skills and liaison with clients ,
Agricultural Research knowledge and skills
Extensive knowledge of vegetable production systems (especially RTB crops)
Advanced computer literacy in MS Office suite and plant breeding data analysis software is critical
Knowledge of intellectual property opportunities

SENIOR RESEARCHER – EPV (RE-ADVERTISEMENT)
Salary (R586 283 – R879 422 p.a) all-inclusive Remuneration Package
Key Performance Areas:
Curation of the National Tick Collection,
National Tick Collection maintenance, and compliance with National Science Collections Facilities standards,
Research on tick taxonomy and systematics using both classic taxonomy, geometrics and molecular systematic approaches,
Tick distribution modelling,
Tick identification diagnostic services, Leverage competitive research funding as independent researcher,
Act as line manager for, and be responsible for Personnel Development of subordinates working in the project,
Train and transfer knowledge to students, field veterinary officials and farmers,
Publication of research in appropriate journals and presentation at relevant national and/or international scientific conferences,
Participate in Programme and Institute-related administrative and other duties as requested by the line manager.
Requirements:
PhD degree with specialization in taxonomy and systematics (or equivalent),
Three (3) to five (5) years’ research experience in a similar environment,
NRF rating (advantage),
An ability to execute and participate in multi-disciplinary research projects,
Evidence of peer-reviewed publications (minimum of 10). These publications have to show evidence of classic taxonomy, morphometrics, molecular systematics and distribution modelling,
Evidence of sourcing or obtaining research funds will be an advantage,
Evidence of student training,
Excellent language and communication skills (written and verbal),
Must be able to work independently and reliable.

RESEARCH SUPPORT ASSISTANT
Salary (R107 288 – R160 132 p.a.) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Assist with preparation of growth media for glasshouse trials according to protocol. Adherence to mixing ratios while preparing the growth media,
Assist with preparation of consumables needed to conduct glasshouse trials. These include planting sticks, clean planting pots, sterilized beakers,
Assist with execution and evaluation of glasshouse trials and field trials,
Assist with preparation of inoculum for trials (shake and autoclave inoculum bottles regularly, destroy used inoculum accordingly),
Assist with processing of plant samples under supervision of the research assistant,
Assist with maintaining glasshouse trials by watering and pest control under supervision,
Assist with plant care and maintenance of potted carnation plants. Assist with preparation of new cuttings and harvesting and drying of carnation leaves,
Provides support with organising and hosting of scientific events (Cleaning up for events),
Assist with stock control and inventory management of research consumables (Monitoring and packing of consumables for research, as requested),
Provides verbal feedback (monthly) and adhere to quality standards (destroys fungal material, used soil from trials),
Maintenance and correct use of research equipment (soil pasteurizer, autoclaves, water baths, cooler boxes),
Assist with upkeep of glasshouses, soil preparation room and washing basin. Fumigation of laboratories.
