The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC-VIMP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat, Pretoria.
RESEARCH TECHNICIAN – MEDICINAL PLANTS & INDUSTRIAL CROPS
Key Performance Areas:
• Contributes towards projects. Assists in coordinating work activities and supervises allocated resources if applicable.
• Adheres to financial administrative controls.
• Plans own work activities. Utilises and maintains facilities, materials, and equipment effectively. Conducts research support, collects, captures, and assists with processing data.
• Provides verbal/written reports on work activities and results.
• Assists in the preparation of presentations.
• Assists in optimizing equipment use and/or processes and/or systems.
• Provides input in the optimization of new technologies.
• Assists with technical services.
• Meet peer norm requirements for the specific field of expertise, by recognized scientific contributions at the respective level.
• Comply with all occupational health and safety regulations.
• Pro-active response to hazardous situations.
• Develop technical capacity at an appropriate level.
• Identifies and participates in own learning opportunities.
Requirements:
• BSc degree or National Diploma (3 years) in Agronomy/Crop Science/Plant or Crop Production.
• At least one year experience in a research environment.
• Ability to set-up and manage research trials under open-field conditions, and lead a team of research assistants.
• Good understanding of weed control, soil cultivation methods, fertilization, spraying for disease and pest control, irrigation systems (installation, operation, and maintenance), and sustainable field management.
• Experience and a good understanding of medicinal plants and industrial crops will be an added advantage.
• A good understanding of irrigation scheduling and the use of soil water content monitoring equipment will be an added advantage.
• Good verbal, written communication and presentation skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
• Compliance to safety standards as prescribed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
• A valid driver’s licence.

Competitive remuneration package will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities, and the stature of the position. The ARC-Plant Health and Protection (ARC-PHP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat, Pretoria.
SCM BUYER
(SIX (6) MONTHS FIXED TERM CONTRACT)
Key Performance Areas:
• Perform Supply Chain Management functions and the processing of transactions in line with the National Treasury regulations and ARC policies for purchase requisitions and issuing of purchase orders.
• Handling of internal and/or external enquiries and communicating with all stakeholders and suppliers.
• Compile and submit reports as required.
• Invitation of quotations, processing of orders and follow of all processes related to such.
• Involvement on procurement and sourcing of goods and services.
• Expediting purchase orders, assisting with international procurement and contract procurement.
• Provide advice on the procurement of goods and/or services including sourcing methods.
• Render assistance in the stores when required.
Requirements:
• Bachelor Degree/B-Com Or National Diploma in Supply Chain Management specifically in Sourcing, Logistics, Supply Management or Purchasing Management.
• 1 year experience in Supply Chain Management in public sector procurement.
• Experience with tender processes, CIDB projects and capital equipment.
• Knowledge and understanding of the PFMA and related policies and regulations.
• Knowledge and understanding of maintenance, services and procurement of parts for various types of equipment.
• Knowledge and understanding of contract administration.
• Understanding the scientific research environment will be an added advantage.
• Ability to identify and resolve challenges in line with the policies and regulations.
• Ability to use initiative and work independently and/or with the team
