AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC-OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Pretoria:
SENIOR RESEARCHER VETERINARIAN: EPIDEMIOLOGY AND TRAINING
Key Performance Areas:
• Advise research programs, including statistical analysis, surveillance systems, and public health improvement,
• Investigate diseases or parasites to determine cause and risk factors, progress, life cycle, or mode of transmission,
• Plan and advise research studies to investigate human or animal disease, preventive methods, and treatments for disease,
• Plan, administer and evaluate health safety standards and programs to improve public health, conferring with health department, industry personnel, physicians and others,
• Provide expertise in the design, management and evaluation of study protocols and research questionnaires, sample selection and analysis,
• Conduct research to develop methodologies, instrumentation and procedures for veterinary application, analyzing data and presenting findings,
• Consult with and advise researchers, DALRRD, NDoH officials and others regarding veterinary applications of sciences, such as physics, biology, and chemistry,
• Supervise professional, technical and clerical personnel,
• Manage the Unit by way of packaging ARC-OVR knowledge and technologies into training interventions,
• Establish the ARC-OVR as a premier training institution for continuing education and short courses in animal health for farmers, Animal Health Technicians, vets and related professions,
• Collaborate with sister institutions including institutions of higher learning in delivering agricultural support services at community level,
• Establish the ARC-OVR as the institution of choice for continental and regional training hub for laboratory short courses in Animal Health,
• Ensure participation of communities in the research and development agenda Manage courses and trainer schedule for smooth running of the Unit Ensure accreditation of ARC-OVR as an agricultural training provider and accreditation of ARC-OVR courses,
• Ensure capacity building of researchers and technicians as trainers, assessors and moderator,
• Collaborate with extension services of DAFF for continuous technology upgrade of extension officers,
• Identify and analyse public health issues related to foodborne parasitic diseases and their impact on public policies or scientific studies or surveys.
Requirements:
• BVSc/BVMch with MSc ,PhD will be an advantage,
• Experience in epidemiology and training,
• Public speaking essential,
• 3 - 5 years’ working experience in a similar environment,
• Knowledge of science and agricultural landscape,
• Knowledge of Agricultural Education and training Framework,
• Knowledge of Qualification framework and national Skills framework,
• Knowledge of research study design and evaluation,

• Good interpersonal and communication skills,
• Conceptual and analytical skills,
• Project management skills.
