AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)

The ARC-Vegetables, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC-VIMP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat, Pretoria:
RESEARCHER: PLANT BREEDING
Key Performance Areas:
• Undertakes potato breeding and manages all associated multi-site evaluation trials,
• Collects data, analyses and reports research outputs scientifically,
• Contributes to the effective management of the potato genetic resources in collaboration with the genebank curator,
• Develops sufficient understanding on the dynamics of the national and international potato breeding programmes and cultivar commercialisation models,
• Contributes to the scientific outputs of the ARC through scientific reports, publications,
postgraduate student supervision, contribution to scientific meetings etc.,
• Manages, supervises and mentors subordinates. Ensure effective utilisation of staff and own time,
• Develops and manages periodic work plans, budgets and reports. Meets institutional deadlines for written documents,
• Complies with HR policies, Health and Safety regulations as well as other institutional rules and norms,
• Contributes to the potato cultivars commercialisation programmes and initiatives.
Requirements:
• PhD in Plant Breeding or Plant Genetics, with 3 years’ working experience,
• Traceable experience in plant breeding in general and potato breeding research in particular,
• Sufficient knowledge on IP and PBR management,
• Knowledge on data handling, analysis and scientific report writing,
• Published scientific outputs and contributions provide competitive advantage,
• Sufficient knowledge on computer literacy in general and use of data analysis software in particular,
• Good communication skill and comfortable working within a diverse team,
• Knowledge in plant tissue culture system is an added advantage,
• Valid South African drivers’ license.
