AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Animal Production (ARC-AP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Irene, Pretoria:
1. RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: KAONAFATSO YA DIKGOMO X 6 (1X GAUTENG, 2X NORTHERN CAPE, 1X MPUMALANGA, 1X NORTH WEST, 1X FREE STATE)
Key Performance Areas:
Provide animal production and improvement services to smallholder farmers,
Train and recruit farmers and teams to Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo Scheme,
Visit farmers for animal recording and improvement purposes,
Train new participants in different phases of Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo Scheme,
Participate in focus sessions/meetings with farmers,
Collecting information from all possible sources to compile a database of current herd statistics and performance of livestock owned by smallholder farmers to derive performance indicators,
Participate in provincial farmer support team to implement the project,
Compiling monthly reports.
Requirements:
• A 3 year National Diploma in Animal Production,
Participate in provincial farmer support team to implement the project,
Compiling monthly reports,
Motivated and prepared to travel to farms and villages,
Good human relation,
Good communication skills (written and verbal),
A Valid driver’s license.

2. PHD STUDENT: ANIMAL BREEDING AND GENETICS
Key Performance Areas:
• Conducting research on Animal Genetics/Genomics,
• Initiates, manages and contributes towards national projects,
• Publishes semi-scientific and peer-reviewed articles, and publishes in journals with a high impact factor,
• Draw up monthly reports with regard to research progress and data statistics,
• Establishes and maintains networking opportunities (e.g. attends scientific gatherings, workshop with farmer communities),
• Dissemination of the research results in scientific platforms locally and internationally,
• Dissemination of results to the general public platforms,
• Technology transfer to relevant stakeholders,
• Actively identifies and pursues business opportunities, and participates in the dissemination and marketing of information (e.g. seminars, workshops, magazines etc.).
Requirements:
• An MSc degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics/Genetics/Genomics/Biotechnology,
• The student should be approved for or registered for full-time studies at any South African public university, or intend to register for a PhD degree in one of the above fields,
• A proven research background in agriculture and Animal Science related disciplines,
• Ability to work with rural communities and conduct fieldwork,
• Good communication skills (written and verbal),
• Valid driver’s licence (code 8/EB).
