AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
 
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa. 
 
The ARC-Vegetable and Ornamental Plants (ARC-VOP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Roodeplaat, Pretoria: 
 
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER 
 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Identification, removal or reduction of occupational health and safety as well as environmental risks through inspections. 
 Responsible to manage all aspects of OHS and environmental safety. 
 Manage and mitigate all the risk areas, develop and implement an improvement plan. 
 Responsible to train or facilitate training of Safety representatives, first aiders, pesticide sprayers and fire fighters. 
 Continuous evaluation, implementation and improvement of standards, by initiating, reviewing and compiling standard operating procedures. 
 Investigations of motor vehicle accidents and Injury on Duty incidents. 
 Procurement and maintenance of emergency equipment. 
 Advise on selection and use of Personal Protective Equipment. 
 Induction of service providers, new employees and students on OHS processes. 
 Champion a culture of safety and health and environmental compliance throughout Roodeplaat, Cedara and Vredenburg – auxiliary support role. 
 Champion and manage all matters relating to Security. 
 Emergency Evacuation. 
 Incidents reporting and Investigation. 
 Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment. 
 
 
Requirements:
 A 3- year Diploma /degree in OHS, Safety management or Environmental health or related. 
 HWSETA accredited Occupational Health and Safety training courses. 
 Occupational Health and Safety Representative. 
 Minimum (5) five years’ experience in OHS-related field’ 
 Good communication skills (verbal and written). 
 Environmental Compliance (strong recommendation). 
 Professional membership with the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (SAIOSH). 
 Completed courses with SAMTRAC and/or NOSA. 
 Computer literacy. 
 Valid driver’s license.
