ABOUT US 

The Mpumalanga Gambling Board is a juristic persona serving as a provincial public entity, established in terms of section 2 of the Mpumalanga Gambling Act (Act 5 of 1995), as amended. 
The institution has been charged with the responsibility to perform all functions assigned to it in terms of the Mpumalanga Gambling Act or any other legislation by advising, reporting or making recommendations to the Responsible Member on any matter relating to the control of gambling in the Mpumalanga Province.

The Mpumalanga Gambling Board (MGB) was established in December 1995, and is a statutory body reporting to the Provincial Department of Finance Economic Development,and Tourism.

Section 4 of the Act provides for the appointment of no more than ten (10) Board Members, drawn from different backgrounds and the Chief Executive Officer is appointed as an ex-officio Member of the Board.

The Board displays a high standard of professionalism, operates in clear recognition of fairness and honesty by subscribing to principles (socio-economic and legal) that protect the public against any illegal, unfair or unscrupulous practices in the gambling industry. The MGB's operational strategy is committed to being a global player in the ever-changing Gambling regulatory environment.

“To ensure the integrity of gambling through efficient regulation of licensed gambling establishments within the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa” 

OBJECTIVES
  • To perform the functions assigned to it in terms of the Act, including:
    • ensuring the suitability of all persons wishing to participate in the gambling industry within Mpumalanga; and
    • ensuring that gambling activities regulated by the MGB are conducted fairly, honestly and free of criminal influence and exploitation.
  • To ensure that the regulation of gambling is effective and efficient.
  • To render support and advice to the Responsible Member on gambling issues and ensure that the Government’s policy on gambling is implemented.
  • To render support to the National Gambling Board of South Africa.
  • To conduct research, with a view to advising Government on the socio-economic impact of gambling within the Province.
  • To perform the functions of the MGB in accordance with acceptable corporate governance practices.

OPERATIONAL EXPECTATIONS

The Mpumalanga Gambling Board recognises that the residents, visitors and industry role players within the Mpumalanga Province are entitled to the following assurances:
  • That all statutory and legislative requirements are met.
  • That all role players in the gambling industry, including directors, key employees and employees are suitable.
  • The monitoring of industry practices to ensure community benefits and public confidence.
  • Firm and fair regulation, consistent with the provisions of the legislation.
  • Prompt response to licensing applications.
  • Fair administration in respect of dealing with unsuitable and inappropriate activities and operations by licensees.
  • Prompt resolution of patron complaints.
  • Internal operating processes in accordance with good corporate management practices.
  • Timely and accurate reporting.
  • Research to support and contribute to an understanding of the gambling industry and the impact thereof, and
  • Adherence of both staff and members of the Board to the code of conduct of the MGB.
