- Contribute to the innovation outputs (i.e. technologies, prototypes, products, and patents) of the Division.
- Conduct technology and product development for application in health, sensors and wastewater treatment. The tasks include (but not limited to) reaction process designing and engineering, scaling-up, techno economic evaluations, prototype designing and validation processes.
- Plan methodology, equipment, material requirements and implement laboratory operations for the purpose of developing products and fabrication procedures that meet cost, product specification, and performance standards.
- Analyse the root cause of a wide variety of failures related to issues arising in product development and validation processes.
- Identify inefficiencies in scale-up of processes, develop and implement process and product improvement measures.
- Review new product plans and make recommendations for material selection based on design objectives.
- Engage with industry and identify needs of clients, assist in identifying opportunities for technology development and commercialization.
- Supervise and co-ordinate the activities of subordinate staff, to ensure that service of a high standard is rendered at full cost recovery.
- Provide technical and practical guidance in the execution of experiments.

Minimum requirements

- Independently working on developing techno-economic models for a range of process technologies.

- Writing new funding proposals to sustain research activities
- Taking a leading role in organising and promoting seminars and workshops in relation to these projects (including communication, logistics, web content etc.)

KEY PERFOMANCE AREAS:
- Assume the responsibility of Leader on selected MPD’s bench scale tests and pilot plant campaigns.
- Assist with the construction, commissioning and operation of pilot plants and laboratory test equipment of either Flotation or Comminution Group.
- Conduct laboratory experiments and participate in the execution of pilot plants.
- Assist chief investigators to meet the technical objectives of projects and contribute to technical problem solving.
- Train contract workers and operators in the safe and correct use of equipment and in the execution of laboratory and pilot plant-procedures.
- Independently manage unit operations that form part of larger projects. This include planning, staffing, operation, quality control and reporting on those unit operations.
- Perform basic calculations related to the execution of laboratory experiments and pilot plant operations.
- Assume responsibility for calibration of equipment, pH electrodes etc..
- Ensure that data are correctly logged and monitor the accuracy of data that are reported.
- Ensure that all SHEQ matters are fully complied with at all times.

The incumbent will also be expected to assist with construction project management and oversee construction monitoring.
Job description
Design and Documentation:
- Prepare detailed mine rehabilitation designs including the production of construction drawings, and specifications for all applicable works ensuring that all documents accurately capture the nature, size and scope of the project.
- Project initiation including desktop studies and site investigations to produce scoping reports.
- Conducting pre-feasibility studies and community engagement
- Manage specialist sub-consultants like geotechnical specialists, surveyors etc.
- Sign-off rehabilitated mines
- Undertake technical reviews / audits to ensure that designs are in accordance with project / study requirements and company objectives and are produced in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Provide coaching and guidance to less experienced staff, junior engineers and interns to increase technical competence.
Construction Supervision:
- Full contract management of the allocated projects

SHEQ management:
