The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa. 
 
The ARC-Plant Health and Protection seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at the Stellenbosch campus in Western Cape: 
 
RE-ADVERTISEMENT POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER SOILBORNE PLANT DISEASES (THREE 3 YEARS FIXED CONTRACT) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Molecular characterization of Soilborne pathogens. 
• Molecular detection and quantification of Soilborne pathogens in soil, plants and seed. 
• Prepare reports for and conduct contract research independently. 
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific and in popular journals. 
• Present research results at national and international forums. 
• Assist with organisation of scientific events. 
• Supervise technical personnel. 
 
Requirements: 
• PhD with Three years relevant experience in an environment with similar functions. 
• A valid code 08/EB driver’s licence.

RE-ADVERTISEMENT POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER - VIROLOGY (3 YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Independent sample collection on field trips across South Africa. 
• Carry out viral diagnostics using molecular assays according to set protocols or develop new diagnostic tools, including nucleic acid (DNA/RNA) extraction and various diagnostic assays, including ELISA, (q) RT-PCR, PCR, LAMP, RPA and next generation sequencing. 
• Carry out infection trials using agro inoculation and insect-mediated infection and monitor symptom development over a growing season. 
• Compliance with general health and safety regulations; demonstrate safe use of safety equipment, safe application of surface sterilizers, sanitizers and pesticides. 
• Attention to detail and work accuracy, ability to work under pressure and handling of high work load at times and provide support for interns, MSc and PhD students. 
• Identify and participate in own learning opportunities. 
 
Requirements: 
• PhD in Virology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Plant Pathology or related. 
• Prior experience in high throughput next generation sequencing and phylogenetic an advantage. 
• Prior experience in molecular laboratory and glasshouse and tunnel facilities. 
• Prepare reports for and conduct contract research independently. 
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific and in popular journals. 
• Present research results at national and international forums. 
• Candidates should be capable of designing and carrying out high-level, complex research experiments independently. 
• Good record of accomplishment of publication is desirable. 
• Driver’s license.
