The ARC-Plant Health and Protection seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at the Roodeplaat Campus: Pretoria
SENIOR RESEARCHER: INSECT ECOLOGY
Salary (R586 283-R879 492 p.a ) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Plan, organise, coordinate and undertake research on the use of insect natural enemies and entomopathogenic organisms (nematodes, fungi and viruses) for the biological control of insect pests of crops, such as the Tuta tomato pinworm, Fall armyworm, Diamondback moth, etc,
Undertake both field and laboratory-based research on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of insect pests of crops, using classical biocontrol methods, pesticide application management, habitat management and using innovative technology,
Help drive the initiation, development and commercialization of bioproducts developed in the laboratory,
Independently design, plan, collect, capture, analyse and interpret laboratory and field research data,
Develop and maintain national and international collaboration networks,
Write project proposals and successful application for external research funding,
Manage human capacity, budgets and project resources to achieve contractual obligations.
Responsible for activities and interventions to ensure that research and development targets are met,
Publish research results in high quality peer-reviewed journals and semi-scientific/popular articles,
Transfer technology at national and international conferences and workshops, and training events.
Requirements:
Phd in Entomology or relevant qualification with entomology as the major,
Post-doctorate, or work experience in Applied Entomology and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will be an advantage
Proven research track record, particularly in Applied Entomology / Insect ecology / IPM.
Experience of research undertaken in insecticide resistance studies / IPM / biocontrol using insects and pathogens will be an advantage,
Proven ability to successfully apply for research funding,
Experienced in research design, planning, data collection, analysis and interpretation,
Ability and willingness to travel on local projects, undertake physical work, and work extended hours if required,
Ability and experience to lead projects, manage human capacity and resources, and deliver on contractual obligations,
Proficiency in MS office suite with good statistical knowledge (e.g. Statistical),
Proven experience and track record in scientific publication in quality peer-reviewed journals, report writing, presenting at conferences, compiling popular articles and marketing materials, as well as networking and co-ordination of projects on national and international levels,
Code B/EB driver’s license and experience required.

FACILITIES OFFICER: TRANSBOUNDARY ANIMAL DISEASES LABORATORIES – RE-ADVERTISEMENT
Salary (R381 841 pa – R572 759 pa) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Manage Transboundary Animal Diseases Laboratories (TAD) Workshop,
Liaise with scientists and researchers regarding their logistics needs and requirements within the section. Planning, designing and manufacturing of specialized equipment,
Carry out improvements and maintenance of the Plant and Facilities,
Compile TAD Facilities budget inputs and adhere to the allocated budget,
Ensure that TAD Facilities comply with OHSA and Regulations,
Train personnel to ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and production optimisation,
Ensure and maintain good housekeeping, equipment inspections and testing including facility defect detection,
Health and safety Management,
Implementation and awareness drives and exercise all forms of security to ensure a safe and risk free working environment for all.
Requirements:
National Diploma or Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Facilities Management Equivalent qualifications,
5 years’ experience in Facilities Management,
General Machinery Regulation 2.1 Level 2 (GMR 2.1) Certificate of Competency,1990 is a prerequisite.
Extensive knowledge of hard and soft services,
Project & Contract Management,
Knowledge of Health & Safety Regulations,
Proficiency in MS Office Suites,
Good communication, problem solving, analytical, report writing and organizational skills,
Knowledge of Building Management Systems will be an advantage.
