The ARC-Animal Production (ARC-AP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Roodeplaat, Pretoria:
POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS - RANGE & FORAGE SCIENCES: X 2 (THREE (3) YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT)
Key Performance Areas:
Participates in planning and coordinating field trips.
Conduct seed collections from various locations in South Africa.
Set up characterisation trials and capture data on the trials.
Participate in the successful transfer of scientific technology i.e., compilation reports, oral and poster presentations.
Pro-actively provide technical input within the context of the research project/s.
To contribute to research by rendering desired support to research staff and to optimise the utilisation of resources in the most cost effective and efficient manner.
To utilise and maintain facilities, apparatus and equipment.
To comply with the Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Requirements:
A PhD/MSc/BSc Or National Diploma in Botany/Plant Ecology/Agriculture or related Degree.
Must intend to register in 2024 for an MSc or PhD to work on characterisation of indigenous grass and legume species.
Understanding of basic principles of research.

Experience in the use of Bioinformatics and other genetic data analysis tools is an added advantage.
Experience and know-how in plant tissue culture systems (including knowledge on plant material propagation schemes) is an added advantage.
Authored or co-authored a minimum of two peer-review scientific publications in a related field.
Experience in breeding of root and tuber crops (sweet potatoes, potatoes, cassava, onion) is an added advantage.
Demonstrable experience in project management.

Assist research team members with procurement of consumables, communicate with supply chain, do budget revisions, store requests and following up on quotes with end-users.
Provide support with preparation and processing of research material in the diagnostic and molecular analytical laboratory.
Assist with curation of the National Collections of Nematology and Arachnology with activities to include, but not limited to, sorting, labelling, slide preparation and preparing loans of specimens.
Provide basic administrative support to the research team.
Ad hoc tasks such as of setting up equipment and preparing materials for courses, exhibitions, visitors and conducting fieldwork.
Requirements:

Key Performance Areas:
Assumes overall responsibility in the management of genetic resources (in vitro, ex situ and seed collections) and supporting infrastructure.

Key Performance Areas:
Oversees the management of (supervision of lab managers) for the various in vitro/tissue culture labs (Conservation tissue culture labs, commercial tissue culture lab, quarantine tissue culture lab and mutation breeding tissue culture lab) and associated green/glasshouse infrastructure.
Initiates and manages research projects on plant tissue culture, method development and optimization of existing protocols.
