Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH) Department of Health (DOH) and Omnigen Biodata Limited, UK. The aim of the study is to create a dynamic resource of demographic, health and genetic data to understand clinical disease progression and informed risk prediction. The study will enrol up to 100,000 participants (patients) attending IALCH and other health facilities over a two-year period, and integrate their electronic health record (EHR) with genetic data. The incumbent will be based in Durban, at IALCH, Medical School Campus and potentially in other health facilities. The Phlebotomist is responsible for recruiting and enrolling participants and obtaining biological samples from study participants using standard procedures. They will be responsible for collecting adequate samples so that they can be analysed in the laboratory, whilst ensuring no harm comes to the patient. Use standard procedures to obtain adequate quality and volumes of blood samples for research purposes, in line with participant consent, and without harming the patient. Correctly assign sample identifiers (IDs) to study participants using a secure online software on a tablet device. Furthermore, the successful candidate will: • Store samples appropriately, following standard procedures, prior to analysis in the laboratory • Explain the procedure to participants and provide reassurance where needed Minimum Requirements: • Matric • 2-years’ experience in a phlebotomy role; • Phlebotomy certificate to practice phlebotomy and proof thereof; • Registration in relevant discipline with HPCSA/SANC and proof thereof; • Prior experience working with patients in a healthcare setting Essential Requirements • Excellent communication skills • Fluent in English and Zulu • Data capturing Skills on a tablet device • Good listening and observational skills • Prior experience in taking informed consent and enrolling participants into research studies This post reports to Senior Study Coordinator.
