DIRECTOR (Payclass 13(5)) OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR COMMUNICATION & MARKETING DEPARTMENT The main purpose of this position is to develop, implement and monitor a strategic UCT communication and marketing plan according to the University’s overall strategic goals. The incumbent is to implement this plan through the internal management of the CMD team in close liaison with the Executive Director: CMD, ensuring direct alignment of work with the institution’s Executive. The incumbent must ensure that all UCT offerings in the various communication platforms (online media, print, video, promotional and advertising material, events & stakeholder engagements) are of excellent quality that demonstrably contributes to the positioning of UCT globally. CLINICAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT (4 POSTS) (3-year contract; Payclass 06) Centre for Public Mental Health Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health Faculty of Health Sciences The Centre for Public Mental Health in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health has been awarded a research grant: Improving Adolescent mentaL health by reducing the impact of poVErty (ALIVE). The aim of the study is to develop and pilot-test an intervention that addresses poverty and strengthens self-regulation, thus preventing adolescent depression and anxiety in urban low- and middle-income settings. The research project is funded by the Wellcome Trust, led by King’s College London, with co-Principal Investigators and Collaborators across different academic and research partner institutions in Europe, South America, Asia and Africa. The South African component is based in the Cape Metropolitan area and will involve (1) developing a theoretical model of the causal mechanisms linking poverty, self-regulation and depression and anxiety among adolescents (age 10-19 years); (2) collaboratively developing a multi-component selective prevention intervention targeting self-regulation and skills for academic and employment success among adolescents at high risk of developing depression or anxiety living in urban poverty in Colombia, Nepal and South Africa; (3) adapting and validating key instruments to measure eligibility, implementation, mediators, and outcomes of the intervention; and (4) undertaking a 4-arm pilot randomised controlled trial of the selective prevention intervention in each site. The main purpose of these positions will be to conduct fieldwork for the various work-packages of the ALIVE project. Responsibilities include: recruitment of participants, qualitative and quantitative data collection (i.e. interviews, focus group discussions, surveys), research administration (including quality checking and follow ups), regular reporting and record-keeping according to study protocols. This is a full-time 3-year fixed term (T2) contract, for four Clinical research assistant positions to start in March/April 2023. Clinical research assistants will be selected according to the project’s language requirements for data collection teams to be fully bilingual in (1) English-isiXhosa and (2) English-Afrikaans. There are two Field supervisor positions available to lead two language teams: i.e. (1) English-isiXhosa; and (2) English-Afrikaans. Fieldwork will be done across various work-packages, including (1) the transcultural adaptation, pilot testing, and validation study of instruments; and (2) baseline and follow up measurements of a 4-arm randomised controlled trial. The Field supervisors will be responsible for the line management of 2-4 Clinical research assistants, managing the fieldwork logistics and processes, ensuring that recruitment of participants is performed to a high and consistent standard, and monitoring the progress and quality of the data collection. They will also support training and related research activities, including doing both qualitative and quantitative data collection (focus groups, interviews, surveys). They will manage relationships with research sites (schools and NGOs), accurate record-keeping, and provide weekly reports on fieldwork progress. Field supervisors need to have an active registration status at the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP), as they will be the first port of call to support fieldworkers in managing risk at the sites in real time. This is a full-time 3-year fixed term (T2) contract position starting in March/April 2023. SENIOR RESEARCH MANAGER: J-PAL AFRICA (Payclass 11, Permanent – Soft funded) J-PAL Africa in the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU), School of Economics Faculty of Commerce J-PAL Africa seeks a senior research manager to manage multiple research projects that test the impacts of a variety of social programmes in South Africa through randomised evaluations (also known as randomized control trials). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the generation of scientific evidence about what works in the fight against poverty. The senior research manager will build the capacity of young, talented research staff, and will get hands-on experience with real-world policymakers and their programmes – all while working at the frontier of academic research. The position holder should be a capable manager of field research projects, with excellent quantitative research and people management skills. The role involves managing the research staff who work on these studies, closely liaising with the academic researchers who design and lead the projects and ensuring that the projects are implemented with fidelity to the study design. A key component of the role involves ensuring rigorous data quality measures are in place, including high-frequency checks, back-checking, effective training and debriefs with field staff, and other measures as required. The role also involves building and maintaining strong relationships with project partners – often governments and large NGOs - and working with them to ensure study results inform their programmes and policies.
