RESEARCH NURSE x2 (1 year contract; Payclass 08) Neurosciences Institute (NI), Paediatric Neurosurgery Faculty of Health Sciences Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the above one-year fixed term contract (37.5 hours per week) position as a research nurse, for appointment as soon as possible. Paediatric Neurosurgery has an active, dynamic research program, fundamentally linked with paediatric clinical services. Our key research areas include traumatic brain injury and TB meningitis. CLINICAL RESEARCH WORKER (Payclass 04) Department of Psychiatry & Mental Health Faculty of Health Sciences The HIV Mental Health Research Unit within the Division of Neuropsychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health seeks to appoint a Peer Interventionist to administer a stepped care, evidence-based counselling treatment to improve antiretroviral therapy adherence and substance use disorder among people with HIV in Cape Town, South Africa. For this position, a peer is defined as an individual who shares a common identity with the patient population, for instance by being in recovery from prior harmful alcohol or other drug use (or being a close associate of someone in recovery),and has close relations with people living with HIV/AIDS. The peer will be trained and supervised in administering the behavioral intervention and supported in how they can incorporate their own lived experiences into the intervention. The research is funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) in the United States. and is a R01 grant, in collaboration with investigators from the University of Maryland. Requirements: • An academic qualification of a PhD in neuroscience or neurophysiology. • At least 4 years of postdoctoral experience in neuroscience research. • Extensive experience (at least 4 years) performing patch-clamp electrophysiology on human brain tissue. • Extensive experience (at least 4 years) preparing human neurosurgical tissue for in vitro brain slice experiments. • Experience programming in a relevant programming language for data analysis (Matlab, Python, R). • Experience liaising with neurosurgeons, neurologists and clinical teams to obtain ethically sourced human neurosurgical tissue. • Experience setting up and managing clinical databases (REDCap) • Experience supervising or co-supervising students at a postgraduate level. • A substantial track record of publishing in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals in neuroscience or neurophysiology. Advantages: • A record of securing research funding and/or research awards. • Experience leading a small research team. • Teaching experience delivering undergraduate and postgraduate lectures in cellular neurophysiology and neuroscience. • Indication of leadership and/or engagement in social responsiveness activities. • Able to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary teams Responsibilities: • Liaise with neurosurgeons, neurologists and clinical teams to obtain ethically sourced human neurosurgical tissue. • Prepare human neurosurgical tissue for in vitro brain slice experiments. • Acquire electrophysiology and morphology datasets from human brain tissue. • Analyze data using relevant programming languages (Matlab, Python, R). • Setup and maintain clinical databases (REDCap). • Supervise postgraduate students. • Produce research outputs in the field of human brain slice electrophysiology. • Write up research for publication and present at local and international meetings. • Develop future research projects including applying for research support from local and international funding agencies. • Comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures, and practices for the postdoctoral sector. The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is between R544 062 and R600 000 (research funding).
