JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOW (3-year contract) Artificial Intelligence Research Unit Department of Computer Science Faculty of Science The Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (AIRU) at the University of Cape Town aims to provide research and thought leadership to academia, industry, government, and civil society, so that they can leverage AI to improve people's lives. We are seeking a Junior Research Fellow to join the AIRU team’s research programme in Human-Centred AI. The position is primarily funded by a University Research Committee (URC) Junior Research Fellow (JRF) award. Requirements for the position: • A PhD specializing in Artificial Intelligence or a related area. • A research track record including a demonstrated ability for independent research and publications in high-quality conference proceedings and/or journals. • At least 2 years’ experience as a postdoctoral research fellow in Artificial Intelligence or a related area. Candidates without two years of postdoctoral experience, but meeting the other two requirements, may be considered. Advantageous: • Research experience in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning. • Research experience in Adaptive and Cognitive systems. Responsibilities include: • Undertake and participate in AIRU research projects in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Adaptive and Cognitive Systems and Human-Centred AI under the guidance of Prof Tommie Meyer and A/Prof Deshen Moodley. • Conduct independent research; prepare and communicate peer-reviewed conference and journal papers; and supervise and mentor postgraduate students in the AIRU. • Research administration, such as writing funding proposals, and research project coordination and management. The Fellow is expected to work in collaboration with the AIRU team and its broader network to research and develop novel AI techniques, AI driven systems and AI applications to deal with South Africa’s and Africa’s social and development challenges. The tenure of the position is 3 years, renewal each year being dependent on satisfactory progress. The commencement date should be in 2023. The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is R 658 000 per annum for 3 years. JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOW (3-Year Fixed Term Contract) Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU), School of Economics Faculty of Commerce The Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU) is based in the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town. The DPRU specialises in academically rigorous socio-economic research through the application of economic and statistical techniques. The DPRU’s aim is to produce academically credible policy analysis, with research clients including national and provincial government departments, local and international donors, and international agencies. The broad areas in which research is undertaken include labour market analysis; issues around unemployment, poverty and inequality; inclusive growth; analysis of skills and occupation in the South African labour market and analysis of South African wage trends. We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons for a Junior Research Fellow. The successful candidate will be involved in original empirical research, data analysis, report writing, and publishing. Requirements for the position: • A PhD degree in Economics; • At least two years’ post-doctoral work experience; • Demonstrated interest in at least one of the following fields: labour markets, development economics, poverty, inequality, and/or social policy, human capital/education; • Strong analytical skills relating to quantitative and/or qualitative data; • Good working knowledge of STATA or similar statistical package; and • Willingness to work both individually and as part of a team. JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOW: HUMAN NEUROPHYSIOLOGY (4-year contract) Division of Cell Biology DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN BIOLOGY FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES The Raimondo Laboratory within the Division of Cell Biology, Department of Human Biology, Neuroscience Institute and Faculty of Health Sciences, is seeking to appoint a general biologist with a specialisation in neurophysiology as a Junior Research Fellow to perform and lead research in human brain slice electrophysiology. The applicant’s research will occur within the Raimondo Laboratory, in close collaboration with Neurosurgeons at Red Cross Childrens Hospital and Constantiaberg Mediclinic. Requirements: • An academic qualification of a PhD in neuroscience or neurophysiology. • At least 4 years of postdoctoral experience in neuroscience research. • Extensive experience (at least 4 years) performing patch-clamp electrophysiology on human brain tissue. • Extensive experience (at least 4 years) preparing human neurosurgical tissue for in vitro brain slice experiments. • Experience programming in a relevant programming language for data analysis (Matlab, Python, R). • Experience liaising with neurosurgeons, neurologists and clinical teams to obtain ethically sourced human neurosurgical tissue. • Experience setting up and managing clinical databases (REDCap) • Experience supervising or co-supervising students at a postgraduate level. • A substantial track record of publishing in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals in neuroscience or neurophysiology. Advantages: • A record of securing research funding and/or research awards. • Experience leading a small research team. • Teaching experience delivering undergraduate and postgraduate lectures in cellular neurophysiology and neuroscience. • Indication of leadership and/or engagement in social responsiveness activities. • Able to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary teams Responsibilities: • Liaise with neurosurgeons, neurologists and clinical teams to obtain ethically sourced human neurosurgical tissue. • Prepare human neurosurgical tissue for in vitro brain slice experiments. • Acquire electrophysiology and morphology datasets from human brain tissue. • Analyze data using relevant programming languages (Matlab, Python, R). • Setup and maintain clinical databases (REDCap). • Supervise postgraduate students. • Produce research outputs in the field of human brain slice electrophysiology. • Write up research for publication and present at local and international meetings. • Develop future research projects including applying for research support from local and international funding agencies. • Comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures, and practices for the postdoctoral sector.
