RESEARCH NURSE (Payclass 08; 12-month contract) Department of Medicine Faculty of Health Sciences The Department of Medicine invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a 12-month contract position as a Research Nurse for appointment as soon as possible. We are looking for an individual with experience in clinical research to join our team working on TB/HIV related project; StatinTB. This is a proof-of-concept, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of atorvastatin to reduce inflammation after tuberculosis treatment completion in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected adults measured by FDG-PET/CT. The prospective candidate will be required to perform general research nurse duties and to assist the team with the implementation of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP)-funded StatinTB protocol between the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the clinical research site that will be based in Kensington, Cape Town. This 12-month full-time contract post will be held at the Department of Medicine within the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Cape Town (UCT). SENIOR RESEARCH MANAGER: J-PAL AFRICA (Payclass 11, Permanent – Soft funded) J-PAL Africa in the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU), School of Economics Faculty of Commerce J-PAL Africa seeks a senior research manager to manage multiple research projects that test the impacts of a variety of social programmes in South Africa through randomised evaluations (also known as randomized control trials). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the generation of scientific evidence about what works in the fight against poverty. The senior research manager will build the capacity of young, talented research staff, and will get hands-on experience with real-world policymakers and their programmes – all while working at the frontier of academic research. The position holder should be a capable manager of field research projects, with excellent quantitative research and people management skills. The role involves managing the research staff who work on these studies, closely liaising with the academic researchers who design and lead the projects and ensuring that the projects are implemented with fidelity to the study design. A key component of the role involves ensuring rigorous data quality measures are in place, including high-frequency checks, back-checking, effective training and debriefs with field staff, and other measures as required. The role also involves building and maintaining strong relationships with project partners – often governments and large NGOs - and working with them to ensure study results inform their programmes and policies. The position will be based in the Johannesburg or Cape Town office of J-PAL Africa, the Africa regional office of J-PAL Global, which forms part of the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) in the University of Cape Town’s School of Economics. Travel to other locations in South Africa will be required for fieldwork supervision, partner management, and work with J-PAL staff or other colleagues. The Abdul Latif Jameel Action Lab (J-PAL) aims to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is informed by scientific evidence. J-PAL consists of a global network of academics who specialise in conducting randomised evaluations of social policies/programmes to generate this evidence. The main purpose of this job is to take overall responsibility for financial and finance-related administrative procedures in the department including its research activities. Requirements include: • Grade 12, plus degree or diploma in accounting/bookkeeping or equivalent plus a minimum of four years’ relevant experience, OR, if qualified by experience, a minimum of seven years relevant experience at the required level • Proven experience of budgeting, financial management and reporting • Advanced computer literacy especially in MS Office, including Excel, and good data management skills. • Ability to work independently, efficiently and accurately. • Well-developed financial skills with some exposure to aspects of financial accounting (includes analytical skills, problem solving and budgeting) • Proven analytical skills with broad knowledge of financial management accounting principles. • Good interpretive and reporting skills • Ability to communicate and interact successfully with all clients, at all levels, in a professional manner. • Ability to exercise judgement, solve problems and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. University of Cape Town Lung Institute CENTRE FOR CHILD AND ADOLESCENT LUNG HEALTH UNIT COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER The Centre for Child and Adolescent Lung Health Unit (CHILD), based at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, requires applications for a COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER* on a Fixed Term Contract. The successful incumbent will be responsible for screening and recruiting new clinical trial participants; as well as supporting study participants.
