Individuals are invited to submit applications in response to the following position: PRESIDENT/CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO) (HEAD OFFICE: CAPE TOWN) Five-year fixed-term appointment (renewal is subject to performance outcomes) The South African Medical Research Council is one of the world’s most highly respected medical research bodies and a global leader in health research. The SAMRC seeks to appoint a President/CEO to serve as leader of this premier statutory research organisation, which has a head office in Cape Town and offices in Pretoria and Durban. The SAMRC’s goal is to generate new knowledge and develop new technologies aimed at improving the health of the nation. Key responsibilities: The successful candidate will be required to lead the implementation of the organisation’s strategic objectives through: • Leading the generation of new knowledge through excellence in the conduct of health research in South Africa. • Facilitating the translation of research findings into national and global policies and practices to improve health. • Supporting and funding innovation and technology development to improve health. • Building capacity for the long-term sustainability of the country’s health research. • Ensuring that the SAMRC’s administration is effective and efficient, compliant with Government regulations, through good governance and fully functional structures for effective decision-making. • Undertaking fund-raising efforts for health research in South Africa. • Facilitating effective communication with key stakeholders and representing South African health research in global fora. Requirements of the candidate: Essential requirements: • A medical qualification and registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Practitioner. • A clinician-scientist of international repute with an established record of excellence and achievement in health research. • At least ten (10) years’ experience in academic or research management organisations. • Strong leadership, interpersonal and negotiation skills. • An understanding of the national and international health research environment. Desirable requirements: • A postgraduate research degree, preferably a Doctorate or equivalent. • A business management-related qualification or leadership qualification. • Appropriate senior management experience, including a track record of leading human resource and financial management functions in large organization. • An understanding of the research process, peer-review and research grant funding processes and practices. • A track record in raising research funds locally and internationally. • An understanding of good corporate governance and compliance with PFMA. • A track record of demonstrable contributions to transformation within large organisations. The SAMRC offers a highly competitive, all-inclusive remuneration package, which is negotiable depending on experience and qualifications.
