APPLY TO POSITION SENIOR RESEARCH TECHNLOGIST (One full time position, one-year contract) The Mental Health, Alcohol, Substance Use and Tobacco Drug Research Unit is looking for an experienced, energetic and organized senior research assistants to work on the PEGISUS study (Peer Education for Gender Inclusion and Substance Use in Southern Africa), a small randomized controlled trial working with adolescents and young people who use substances, and their peers, to provide them with interventions placed within vocational training programmes. The successful candidates will be responsible for overseeing and conducting marketing, outreach, screening and recruiting participants as necessary, consenting participants, tracking and retaining participants in the study as well as administrative tasks and skills training as required. Successful candidates will be based between the MASTRU Delft site and an office based in Capricorn Park and will be expected to work within a number of surrounding communities on a daily basis. Responsibilities: • Input into protocol development as needed and drafting SOPs • Assistance with training of vocational training staff members and field staff • Data collection and data entry tasks • Responsible for administrative tasks as needed • Data quality and assurance • Screening, recruitment, and enrolment of participants • Writing of reports and data management tasks Core Requirements: • Three-year Bachelor’s Degree • 2 (Two) years’ experience as a fieldworker • Speak fluent English AND Afrikaans Advantageous: • Social sciences or public health preferred • Previous research experience working with substance use, HIV and young people • Have a valid South African driver’s license with current driving experience • Be comfortable working with young people who use substances • Familiarity with communities in Cape Town area (particularly in Capricorn Park, Vrygrond and surrounding area) Terms & Conditions: The SAMRC retains the right not to make an appointment. Senior Research Technologist: Research Coordinator Duration: 1 year contract The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is seeking to appoint a Research Coordinator in its Health Systems Research Unit (HSRU). The purpose of this job is to assist and work with the study team on a new project focusing on E-health technology. The aim of this study is to develop an integrated e-health intervention package for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) for women and girls living in rural communities in South Africa. The study will be conducted in rural communities of KwaZulu Natal. Responsibilities: To coordinate and manage the logistics of the study implementation which includes: • Assist in training of the field team. • Assist in the logistical arrangements for data collection and mapping exercise. • Set up, manage, and coordinate stakeholder engagement. • Set up, manage, and monitor quality control and quality assurance processes. • Ensure data is collected, organized and stored according to SAMRC ethical principles. • Produce reports on study progress for project manager and team. • Assist with writing up the research outputs. • Ensure that transport for the data collection team to the field is ready prior going to field • Ensure that all data collection tools (forms, equipment, etc. are prepared prior heading to filed) making sure all documents required are in field team’s possession. • Accurately documenting all research related information (consent forms, participant reimbursement, etc.) in order to facilitate ease of retrieval and reporting • Management of assets and coordination of meetings or project logistics, filing of documents as per operating procedures • Implement quality control checks and verify questionnaire and data management. • Set up, manage, and monitor quality control and quality assurance processes. • Provide training and on-going support of colleagues and data collectors on research procedures. Core Requirements: • 3-year degree in public health or related field or similar qualification or higher • At least 2-3 years’ research experience in public health studies • Experience with enrolling participants into studies, obtaining consent/assent, quantitative surveys. • Experience with writing research reports • Experience with translations of study material • Proficient in MS (word, excel, outlook, PowerPoint) • Code 08 Manual Driver’s license • Effective organisational skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team. • Knowledgeable about SRH issues of young women in particular • Experience in collecting data using Survey to Go / REDCap • Self-motivated and the ability to work independently; manage multiple tasks and a small team effectively. • Fluency in speaking and writing in English and isiZulu.
