SOUTH AFRICAN LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND: FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY The South African Library for the Blind (SALB), which is the only national library for the blind in South Africa and the African continent, is seeking to establish a forum for like-minded people called “Friends of the Library (FOL)”. Joining this forum implies that one is committing himself/herself to support the Library in various initiatives aimed at improving and extending its services to the blind, visually impaired and print-handicapped people of South Africa. Presently, the Library's head office is in the Eastern Cape Province in a small town called Grahamstown (Makhanda). Eligibility to be SALB Friends of the Library: The South African Library for the Blind is opening opportunities to like-minded individuals and organisations to join the forum for the SALB Friends of the Library to achieve the following: • Organisations, NGOs, and community forums, that can join hands in sharing platforms and databases with South African Library for the Blind and advertise its services to attract more blind and visually impaired members so that those members can access information resources and devices to read such information, • Individual businesses that value the “spirit of Ubuntu” and are willing to donate a nominal fee on a monthly/quarterly/annual basis to ensure the blind, visually impaired and print handicapped gain access to information through receiving devices and resources that can make their contribution to the society easy, • Companies who are willing to donate to SALB funds that will guide and assist the Library to expose young and emerging professional blind graduates to internship programmes that will help them obtain work experience and provide them an opportunity for employability, • Individuals/organisations that are willing to assist SALB with the drafting of sound fundraising proposals to assist the organisation in generating revenue and funds that will in turn enable the organisation to extend its services to the marginalised blind community, • Individuals or groups of people that are willing to volunteer skills and or are already part of our volunteers willing to braille and/or develop audio transcriptions to expand the reading materials for blind people. The library management will be responsible for the registration of the members by opening a call centre and an account that can be used by the forum and organise meetings and events to launch the forum so that members can be introduced to each other, SALB business operation and management. The SALB management will account to the FOL on the initiatives established within the framework of the Friends of the Library by submitting and presenting reports on FOL’s accomplishments. Should you be interested in joining and being part of the First SALB FOL for the year 2024, please feel free to contact the following: vusumzi.mkhetshane@salb.org.za and ceo@salb.org.za The Board of the South African Library for the Blind (SALB) invites applications from suitably qualified South African citizens for the following position to commence on 1 May 2024 or earlier: OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR – 6 MONTH CONTRACT OVERVIEW OF POST: The main responsibility of the Office Administrator (Office of the CEO) is to render an excellent and professional office administrative and secretariat service to the office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), as well as secretariat service to the SALB Board and sub-committees of the board. Minimum Requirements: • National Diploma or Degree in Office Administration, Public Administration or Business Management. • At least 3 years office administrative work experience of which 2 years should be in support of a Senior Manager dealing with confidential and strategic level matters. Having worked as a PA or Office Administrator for a Senior Executive will be advantageous. • Knowledge of PFMA, Treasury Regulations and SCM Legislation and prescripts will be advantageous. • Strong knowledge (training) in POPI Act and PAIA • Working experience in a secretariat and/or administrative support role of board and/or councils will be advantageous Other skills and attributes: • A highly motivated and driven individual • Good (English) written and verbal communication skills. • Excellent administrative, business writing, minute taking and secretarial skills. • Detail oriented and deadline driven. • Intermediate or higher-level experience in the Ms Office Suite. • Strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to prioritize workload. • Good interpersonal skills. • Excellent record management skills Having the following skills will be a distinct advantage: • Proven experience in having dealt with procurement and suppliers. • Working knowledge of Service Level Agreements and Memoranda of Understandings. • Good financial management skills.
