Over the next 4 years we will continue to increase our research productivity by strategically placing University investment into areas where potential excellence is nurtured. Amongst others, the University will actively recruit and attract postdoctoral research fellows to provide an opportunity to make a significant contribution in the development of postgraduates as well as in advancing new scientific knowledge and innovation in their chosen research field. The Research and Innovation Directorate therefore invites applications from eligible individuals with a doctoral degree to apply for the following Postdoctoral Research Fellowship opportunity: • Research and Innovation Directorate (Genomics and Bioinformatics) The role of Postdoctoral Research Fellows • Conduct research on an approved research niche under the supervision of an Established Researcher; • Publish 3 or more peer-reviewed research articles per year; and assist in teaching, supervising, and mentoring of postgraduate students. Value for support Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Value (R): 300 000 pa* Duration: 2 years** Minimum Requirements: • PhD in Molecular Biology, Human Genetics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or related fields within the last five years. • Strong background and experience with standard molecular genetics/ molecular biology technologies and next generation sequencing • Experience in data mining, pipeline construction and next generation sequencing analysis and bioinformatics. • Clinical diagnostic experience preferred In addition, applicant should have: • Knowledge and experience working with commonly used database and bioinformatics tools • Experience in analysis and interpretation of whole genome sequencing data • Strong analytical and organization skills • Work effectively with an interdisciplinary team of Scientists and Clinicians Eligibility Criteria Applicants must: • Be South African citizen/ permanent South African resident • Have obtained a doctoral degree • Evidence of published research articles in peer-reviewed journals output • Have some experience in postgraduates’ supervision; and • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
