NATIONAL MUSEUM BLOEMFONTEIN INTERNSHIP VACANCY ENTOMOLOGY DATA CAPTURER The National Museum, Bloemfontein invites applications for an 18 month internship in the Entomology collection of the Terrestrial Invertebrates Department.
Requirements: Bachelor of Science. Preference will be given to interns who have studied entomology. Knowledge of database systems and experience with collections will be an advantage. High levels of accuracy and strong attention to detail. Computer literacy including proficiency in Word, Excel and Access Good planning and organisational skills; Good interpersonal relations; The ability to work under pressure. Key Responsibilities: Capture label data from insect specimens into Excel Verifying existing database records Assist departmental staff as required Recruitment Details: Communication will be limited to the short-listed candidates only; Short-listed candidates will be subjected to a comprehensive selection process; The intern will receive a stipend of R6 000.00 per month. Name: Supervisor: Head of Department (Terrestrial Invertebrates) Substitute: N/A Supervisee/s: N/A Job Title: Intern Data Capturer: Entomology Level: Intern (18 months) Purpose of the Position The Intern data capturer is tasked with databasing of specimen data, verifying captured data, and general curation of entomological specimens. In addition to assist departmental staff with fieldwork and research. Key Performance Areas Capture and verify label data from insect specimens into Excel Assist departmental staff as required with field work and research Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Qualification: A Bachelors’ degree in Entomology/Zoology Experience: Practical experience working with biological specimens. Computer literate, especially knowledge of databases, e.g. Access, Excel. Good administrative and planning skills. Ability to work on repetitive tasks for extended periods. Knowledge: An interest in entomology and good computer skills. An ability to take on new tasks and be trained in insect identification. Personal Attitudes: Ability to work in a team; good interpersonal relations skills; good written English and verbal skills. Task Group: KPA 1: Capture and verify label data from insect specimens into Excel Weighting %: 90 Task Group: KPA 2: Assist departmental staff as required with field work and research Weighting %: 10 TOTAL: 100% KPA 1 – Capture and verify label data from insect specimens into Excel PROCESS: Data capturing and verification TASK: • Undertake data capture of specimen label information • Verify new data captured and occasional verify existing data PROCESS: General curational duties TASK: • Construction of collection unit trays. • Cutting of data labels. KPA 2 – Assist departmental staff as required with fieldwork and research PROCESS: Assist with fieldwork for collection development and research. TASK: • Assist with placing traps. • Assist with pinning of specimens in the field. • Assist with packing for fieldtrips PROCESS: Assisting in departmental initiatives as required. TASK: • Attendance of workshops, training courses and other meetings for training and development. • Assisting with other project work as outlined by the scientists.
