POST DOCTORAL STUDENTSHIP: ORGANIC ANALYSIS (3 YEAR CONTRACT) Salary: R400 000.00 per annum PURPOSE OF THE ROLE To research, develop and implement reference measurements for Organic Analysis in key sectors of pharmaceuticals, food safety and environmental pollution monitoring and deliver these services through the NMISA Africa Reference Institute, thereby supporting fair and safe trade of South African products and services. The post-doctoral student would also be required to assist with skills development and knowledge transfer to younger staff and recently graduated students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE • PhD Chemistry/ Biochemistry/ Pharmaceutical/Food Science/ Environmental Science degree or equivalent scientific qualification in applicable field of study with Chemistry as minimum 1st year subject – the PhD degree was obtained after April 2020 and by 31 March 2023. • Experience with gas and/or liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and related sample preparation techniques for quantitative analysis as applied during the PhD experimental work. • Experience in a laboratory/technical environment (3 years minimum which may also include own experimental work for PhD). • Experience in conducting research and literature reviews as evidenced through publication record. • Level 1- or first-year Mathematics/Statistics as subject would be an advantage. • Excellent report writing skills. • Excellent communication skills. • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Conduct research and provide comprehensive, accurate reports on the outcomes • Research and develop new methods of analysis in pharmaceutical, environmental monitoring and food safety applying quantitative organic analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry etc. • Generate and validate standard operating procedures for the performance of measurements in field of Organic Analysis. • Operate analytical instruments to perform measurements in the field of Organic Analysis metrology. • Maintain detailed records of equipment and measurement results. • Generate certificates and/or reports for the purpose of reporting measurement results. • Generate measurement uncertainty budgets according to the GUM. • Liaise with stakeholders in SA and relevant Regional and International organizations, to provide input for NMISA and gather information as input to NMISA’s strategic planning. • Participate in skills transfer both as a recipient and a trainer by attending courses and conferences presenting at conferences, by developing and presenting courses internally and externally and by publishing peer-reviewed papers • Comply with NMISA’s policies and procedures and perform all duties in line with the Total Quality Management System. • Initiate and follow up on the timely procurement of any equipment, instruments, consumables or other expenses required to execute the duties above.
