INTERNSHIP: PHYSICS EDUCATION (12 months) Salary Range (differentiated according to the level of qualification): R 6 375.00 - R 8 375.00 per month Overview of the Organisation The NMISA is a Type 3A Public Entity established in accordance with the Measurement Unit and Measurement Standards Act, No. 18 of 2006 (the Act). The NMISA is mandated by the Act to provide for the use of the international system of units (the SI) and other measurement units in South Africa, to maintain national measurement standards (NMS) and to determine and ensure the comparability of the NMS. More information can be obtained from www.nmisa.org Purpose of Role: To participate in the development of a Curriculum for the Revised International System of Units (SI) with a specific focus on the perspective of schools in the developing regions. Minimum Qualifications, knowledge and Experience • Completed tertiary qualification within the following study fields: BSc Honours (Physics) or 4-year Bachelor of Education degree (BEd) or equivalent, with Physical Sciences– preference will be given to candidates with excellent academic track record in the profiling study modules • Some evidence of physics education activities or educational studies • Understanding of physics fundamentals (essential requirement) • Competent in MS Office Software package • Good communication skills and report writing skills • Drivers licence as the successful candidate will be expected to visit schools Duties and Responsibilities • The internship project aims to provide insight into learners’ understanding of the fundamental constants of nature and how this translates into their understanding of the role of measurement in science • The successful candidate will work closely with the SI curriculum development group at the University of Cape Town and NMISA, but focus on the needs of schools in developing regions and how their perspectives can be included • To produce materials which enhance the teaching of the science of measurement at first year university and high school levels. The rollout of the Revised SI in November 2018 offers a unique opportunity for this project to have wide-reaching effectiveness Person Specification The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities and competencies: •Strong attention to detail • A keen interest in physics education • Enthusiastic and self-motivated • Good reasoning ability focused on problem solving with independent, proactive action • Good planning and organising skills with analytical approach to work tasks • Honesty and ethical behaviour are of the utmost importance when delivering on assigned tasks within NMISA • Ability to function within a team to achieve a common goal Please note NMISA subscribes to and applies the principles prescribed by the Employment Equity Act.
