The invitation is for UNDERGRADUATE and POST-GRADUATE studies in the disciplines of craft, dance, literature, multidiscipline, music, theatre, and visual arts. The grant will be renewable for the duration of the course, subject to the successful completion of each year of study and with adherence to the conditions of the grant. All applicants of this International Bursary Funding call, particularly those who have been given recognition of prior learning, are required to have been already admitted at their preferred Institution of Higher Learning. New students or those that are already registered and studying at institutions abroad are welcome to apply. Applications will be assessed based on the applicant’s artistic merit, financial need, acceptance at the identified institution, credibility of the qualification they want to pursue as well as the prestige of the institution that they have been accepted at. The grant will not exceed R250 000 per annum and is subject to Council approval. INTERNATIONAL BURSARY FUNDING GUIDELINES – 2023 OPENING DATE: 20 February 2023 CLOSING DATE: 31 March 2023 OUTCOMES DATE: 26 May 2023 This information has been compiled to assist you with your application to access funding from the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC). The NAC’s International Funding Bursary is offered to undergraduate and post graduate students studying towards arts qualifications. These qualifications will be funded on academic merit and acceptance of students in the various international institutions. Students achieving less than 65% will not be considered. In the case where proof exist that tuition fees are already covered from other sources, funding may be directed towards accommodation, books and travel and subsistence allowance. 1. International Bursary Requirements ▪ The NAC’s International Bursary Programme is aimed at advancing the development of talented arts professionals at international institutions through financial support. Bursaries are offered towards an arts qualification at appropriate Institutions of Higher Learning internationally. ▪ Funding may also be made available towards residencies at relevant institutions or with experienced/seasoned arts practitioners. ▪ The Bursary is awarded primarily for tuition and registration fees for the qualification and shall be allocated to such fees first. Any remaining funds may be utilised to cover ancillary costs related to the qualification. Such ancillary costs may include accommodation, books, travel and a subsistence allowance and is subject to the NAC’s written approval. ▪ The Panel shall allocate funding for tuition fees relative to the specific tuition costs at a particular university. Living costs will be determined by the NAC on an annual basis. 2. Applications Requirements: ▪ Only South African students are eligible to apply for funding. ▪ Students must be registered or accepted at an international tertiary institution for a full-time undergraduate and postgraduate arts-related degree. ▪ The requested qualifications will be funded on academic merit. Students achieving less than a 65% average will not be considered. An average of 63% may be considered in exceptional cases. Each case will be reviewed on its own merit and no precedence shall be set. ▪ Recognition of Prior Learning qualification may also be considered upon acceptance of the student at a specific institution. The acceptance by specific international tertiary institutions shall be deemed sufficient. ▪ Preference will be given to students from previously disadvantaged background. ▪ Should the student be successful in his/her bursary application the beneficiary will be required to sign an agreement with the NAC. ▪ The beneficiary will be required to provide the NAC with a signed letter from the institution/supervisor as a progress report as and when the NAC requires one and on completion of the course; this report shall be submitted together with final results to the NAC. ▪ Students whose degree require two to three years of study should not reapply for funding but would be given the grant for the duration of studies, subject to successful completion of each year of study. ▪ The NAC shall be entitled to terminate the agreement for the second semester/year if the progress of the beneficiary is deemed unsatisfactory on the basis of the progress report written by the student’s supervisor. ▪ Upon completion of studies, the beneficiary will be expected to plough back the expertise gained through imparting and sharing of skills with a less privileged organisation, groups of individuals or individual within their community. Services rendered may include workshops, outreach, mentoring, capacity building and administration support. ▪ Proof of such services shall be supplied to the NAC in the submission of a report by the beneficiary and the respective community leader/s or institution accompanied by photographs of the services rendered at the end of the study period indicated in the contract. 3. How to apply for International Bursaries: ▪ Only South African students are eligible to apply for funding. ▪ Applicants are required to complete the online NAC international bursary application form on the Grant Management System. ▪ Applicants are required to check the online application form for any additional supporting documents required. ▪ For further information, applicants are encouraged to review the NAC International Bursary Funding Guidelines. ▪ Incomplete documents, requirements and information will automatically be disqualified. 4. Applications for International Bursaries should be accompanied by the following documentation: ▪ Curriculum vitae. ▪ Certified copy of a South African identity document not be older than 12 months. ▪ Course structure/content. ▪ Study fee structure from a tertiary institution. ▪ Proof of acceptance/registration to study at an accredited institution ▪ Transcript of results/recognition of prior learning qualification by academic institutions. ▪ Certified copies of degrees/certificates/diplomas. ▪ Proof of any other bursary funding. ▪ Two reference letters from industry professionals that are signed and dated with a full address. ▪ Motivation explaining why the applicant must be awarded a bursary and outlining future career aspirations. ▪ Proof of household/own income. ▪ Bank statement/Proof of bank account. ▪ Certified documentation must not be older than 12 months.
