DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY SENIOR LIBRARY ASSISTANT – Ref: AL22 (INTERNAL ADVERTISEMNT)- P11 Key Performance Areas: • Work as part of a team dealing with cataloguing, acquisitions, serials and indexing of library material, but specialising in the cataloguing work. • Assist with creating and editing bibliographic records for books in conformity with international cataloguing standards, particularly AACR2, RDA, LCSH, DDC 23 and Web Dewey, MARC21 codes and OCLC WorldCat. • Transfers bibliographic records into the library’s database and resolve duplicates. • Performs word processing/typing for book order forms and purchase orders. • Reconciles incoming materials against invoices and purchase orders. • Responsible for producing and printing labels for all catalogued library materials. • Assist with book and periodicals processing in relation to affixing labels, applying identification stamp and security tags on all library materials as required. • Responsible for repairing damaged or worn library materials. • Prepare a monthly statistical report. • Perform office support functions and other duties as assigned by line manager. Minimum Requirements: • Matric, with a three-year library qualification. • At least two years in an academic library environment • Computer literacy (MS Office suite) • Recent work experience in a library environment • Good communication skills • Excellent customer service skills • Ability to function effectively both independently and as part of the team. Recommendations: • Knowledge of library operations • Strong ability to maintain records in a systematic order • Ability to prioritize work assignments, organize own schedule • Ability to solve problems that may arise and propose solutions • Good understanding and skills in using office software, the integrated library system and searching databases. Competencies: • Proven ability to use Library OPAC system and assisting with database and website searches • Knowledge of a circulation module in an integrated library system • Knowledge of LIS policies and procedures • Ability to check-in new periodicals using the Sirsi- Dynix system • Knowledge of journal and e-resource procedures • Competent in the use of Microsoft Excel • Good communication skills • Excellent client services Salary Scale: R250 811.00 to R356 432.00 basic salary per annum. DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY LIBRARY ASSISTANT – Ref: AL47 (INTERNAL ADVERTISEMNT)- P11 Key Performance Areas: • Issue, return and renew library materials on a computerized circulation system. • Process requests from users for material they cannot find on the shelves. • Deal with users’ queries and problems regarding the stock, overdue materials, etc. • Assist with searches for missing items and keep records. • Identify and prepare materials for repairs and binding. • Monitor and control library use: noise levels / cell phone usage / eating / drinking. • Perform shelving and shelf-reading duties. • Update materials sent to binding on the computerized system. • Assist in stocktaking and weeding activities. • Monitor the physical condition of the collection and inform Librarians about lost and damaged books in order to replace the items. • Identify items on shelf which should be on short loan. • Assist Librarians during library orientation and other trainings as and when necessary. • Contribute to administrative duties as required by the library and information services. • Transport books and equipment within the library and on campus. • Performs messenger duties and other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: • Matric • One year experience shelving books using the DDC system (preferably in an academic library) • Driving license (at least code 8/EB) • Knowledge of the ILS circulation module Recommendations: • Healthy and physical fitness • Lower diploma in Library and Information Science/Studies Competencies: • Understanding of Dewey Decimal Classification system of organizing books • Good numerical skills • Good computer literacy (MS Word, MS Excel, Internet searching, OPAC use, Email) • Ability to work under pressure • Time management skills • Customer-centric skills • Strong customer focus • Good verbal and written skills (listening skills) • Creativity and Innovation • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team Salary Scale: R250 811.00 to R356 432.00 basic salary per annum.
