COLLECTIONS & DIGITISATION DEPARTMENT COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT (NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS: MARINE BIOLOGY) (twelve-month fixed-term contract position) – 1 position Basic Salary Range: R121 740 – R164 664 per annum, excluding benefits Requirements: Grade 12 Proven experience in working with natural history museum specimens/collections Proven experience in working with the Specify database or similar database Knowledge of Marine Biology specimens would be strong advantage Computer literacy in Microsoft 365 • A valid driver’s license is not a requirement but may be an advantage. Key Responsibilities include: Assist with the maintenance of collection data, including the development of inventories, stocktaking, and other clerical tasks Assist with packing, unpacking, and moving of collections material under the supervision of Collections Managers Provide general assistance in storage areas Clean material in storage and on display under supervision of Collections Manager Assist in the preparation, accessioning and registration of new specimens and objects as required. Competencies Required: Ability to pay attention to detail Ability to capture data with complete accuracy Ability to priorities workload Self-motivated Effective communications skills Good interpersonal skills Neat and professional presentation Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines. BASIC SALARY AND BENEFITS The salary range quoted above excludes employment benefits comprising a 13th cheque, a contribution towards a designated retirement fund (compulsory) and a designated medical aid (voluntary) as well as a housing subsidy. Additional employment conditions such as leave entitlement are generous.
