COLLECTIONS & DIGITISATION DEPARTMENT COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT (NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS: INVERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY) (twelve-month fixed-term contract position) – 1 position Basic Salary: R121 740 per annum, excluding benefits. Requirements: Grade 12 Ÿ Proven experience in working with natural history museum specimens/collections Ÿ Proven experience in working with the Specify database or similar database Ÿ Knowledge of Marine Biology specimens would be a strong advantage Ÿ Computer literacy in Microsoft 365 • A valid driver’s license is not a requirement but may be an advantage. Key Responsibilities include: Assist with the maintenance of collection data, including the development of inventories, stocktaking, and other clerical tasks Ÿ Assist with packing, unpacking, and moving of collections material under the supervision of Collections Managers Ÿ Provide general assistance in storage areas Ÿ Clean material in storage and on display under supervision of Collections Manager ŸAssist in the preparation, accessioning, and registration of new specimens and objects as required. Competencies Required: Ability to pay attention to detail Ÿ Ability to capture data with complete accuracy Ÿ Ability to prioritize workload Ÿ Self-motivated Ÿ Effective communications skills Ÿ Good interpersonal skills Ÿ Neat and professional presentation Ÿ Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines. FOSSIL PREPARATOR (NATURAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS: INVERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY) (twelve-month fixed-term contract position) – 1 position Basic Salary: R136 536 per annum, excluding benefits Requirements: Grade 12 • Basic knowledge of zoology • Candidates should be able to sit for several hours looking through a microscope while painstakingly removing rock from fossil bones with an air scribe • Good hand-to-eye co-ordination and fine-motor skills essential. Key Responsibilities include: Preparing fossils to required standards • Participating in field trips • Interacting with museum visitors. BASIC SALARY AND BENEFITS The salary range quoted above excludes employment benefits comprising a 13th cheque, a contribution towards a designated retirement fund (compulsory) and a designated medical aid (voluntary) as well as a housing subsidy. Additional employment conditions such as leave entitlement are generous.
