The incumbent will report to the Ecologist within the Biodiversity Conservation unit and will undertake the research duties and responsibilities and be accountable for achieving results through own efforts to enable the achievement of iSimangaliso’s strategic objectives. Key requirements: A minimum of a National Diploma in Nature Conservation, B Tech Degree or Degree in Biological Sciences. A minimum of 3 years field experience in biological research, ecological advice or conservation management and a valid driver’s license. Competencies Required Good understanding of scientific method and research, monitoring protocols and methods, biodiversity knowledge (species identification, ecosystem functioning), conservation knowledge, environmental legislation and standards knowledge, good skills and extensive experience in GIS software and spatial data analysis, good interpersonal and technical skills. The incumbent will report to the Executive Manager: Biodiversity Conservation, responsible for the research component and accountable for achieving results through own efforts to enable the achievement of iSimangaliso’s strategic objectives. Key requirements: A Bachelor of Science Honours degree or equivalent, majoring in ecology or other relevant subjects, a good track record with at least 4 - 5 years’ experience in the field of marine science is essential, with application to marine conservation is desirable and experience in programmed management and staff/student supervision is required. A valid driving license. Competencies Required Competent ecologist with good communication skills, Inter-personal and management, Computer literacy –Microsoft Office (Competence in GIS would be an advantage), Strong organizational ability and planning skills, Strong mentoring, training and motivational skills, Ability to interpret research findings through reports, presentations, and publications, Knowledge of legislation pertaining to marine and coastal environments, Competent SCUBA diver. LAND CARE CONTRACT MANAGER (X4 POSITIONS) Ref: HR- 04/2022 SALARY: R434 364 per annum (Inclusive of Provident Fund) FIVE YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority, a renowned World Heritage Park where conservation, sustainable tourism and benefit sharing prevails, is looking for an experienced Land Care Contract Manager. This position manages the use of contractors in the accomplishment and implementation of the restoration of the degraded habitat and ecosystems through bush encroachment and alien plant. Wetland restoration activities programme. Key requirements: National Diploma in Conservation or equivalent. Working Knowledge of isiZulu is a pre-requisite. Six (6) months experience in the alien invasive species eradication or control field, Knowledge and/or qualifications in wetlands and/or wetland rehabilitation will be an added advantage. Knowledge of environmental issues/and rehabilitation. Computer literacy, Project Management, and basic financial skills. A valid driver’s license. Key performance areas: Development of Annual Plan: Conducts pre-site inspections to assess the amount of work to be carried out in relation to alien plant control, land rehabilitation and wetland rehabilitation; Assesses density, age / size classes and species to determine workload per contract; Assesses accessibility of alien plants in relation to infield conditions, i.e. slope and obstructive indigenous vegetation and underfoot conditions; Assesses areas of wetland for rehabilitation i.e. cubic meters of material to be moved and area to be revegetated; Clears stumps from former forestry areas; Prepares annual plan outlining resources and timelines together with identified risks. Project Budget Monitoring: Obtains costing information for project to assist in budgeting and forecasting; Monitors spend during the project to prevent overspend on allocated budget; Checks provisions monthly to ensure correctness of allocations; Investigates anomalies and rectifies to remain within budgeted parameters. Contract Management: Liaises with GIS / Mapping Officer to determine geographic size and location to inform contract parameters; Conducts site visits with contractors to outline project requirements; Engages with appointed contractors on project deliverables; Issues contractors with personal protective equipment (PPE) and herbicides for employees; Monitors all aspects related to health and safety on projects; Prepares and issues contracts to the contractors after being signed by Manager; Conducts regular site visits to monitor project progress and ensure work standards are in compliance to contract requirements; Ensures that workers injured on duty are transported to the relevant medical facility; Completes relevant documentation pertaining to Injury on Duty (IOD) and submits to Administrative Assistant for actioning; Ensures contractors comply with iSimangaliso’s projected equity targets.
