Job Advert Summary

• The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) is a research division within the HSRC that employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies.
• The DCES division is looking to appoint a suitably qualified professional in the position of Chief Research Specialist. This position supports and assists the Divisional Executive and the Strategic Leads in implementing the five-year strategic plan of the HSRC. The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research. The two over-arching questions that guide the research interventions are:
• How to strengthen democracy through transparent governance, accountable leadership and reinvigorated public participation/ civic engagement; and
• How to ensure sustainable development through peace, human and social security
• A developmental, capable and ethical state is not possible without ensuring peace and sustainable security within South Africa and beyond its borders. In order to work towards a more socially cohesive citizenry and safer and resilient communities, it is necessary to focus on building a “better South Africa, a better Africa and a better world.”
• The Vision of DCES is for it to be a national, regional and international hub for transformative research in the interests of a just and equal society.
• The Mission of DCES is for it to conduct cutting edge research in the areas of peace, human security, sustainability, democracy, governance and citizenship in an engaged manner that focuses on building a better life for all.

 
Minimum Requirements       
A doctorate (PhD) in the social or economic sciences or related disciplines;
• An established research career as evidenced by publications.
• at least six years’ experience post qualification coupled with 12 or more peer-reviewed publications of which several to be international;
• Excellent writing skills necessary for publication in internationally accredited peer-reviewed academic journals, and for drafting briefing papers and reports;
• Record of raising funds for research. Applicants applying for the CRS/M position should have larger fundraising experience;
• An interest in one of the priority research areas of DCES will be an advantage;
• A sound grounding in research methods, especially quantitative approaches, will be a strong recommendation;
• The versatility to apply quantitative and qualitative methodologies to challenging subject matter across disciplinary boundaries will be advantageous
• Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
• A strong user orientation, based on a commitment to social research that makes a difference;
• The ability and enthusiasm to engage as a team player in large-scale multidisciplinary research projects, to manage research teams, and to mentor and train team members

Duties & Responsibilities
The researcher we seek to appoint on a short term basis needs to be engaged in governance, peace and security challenges particularly in South Sudan. Expected qualities include considerable exposure to African affairs including protocols of the African Union, a proven ability to easily distil the geopolitics and communicate complex research informed gaps and knowledge. The ideal candidate has an ability to manage tight deadlines, communicate to policy makers through policy brief, and journal article. Ability to link research findings & knowledge to policy informing platforms will be an added advantage. The candidate sought will provide research and support the special project on South Sudan.

• Understand the HSRC’s strategy and the mandate of AISA, and support regional implementation planned special projects,

The communications specialist we seek to appoint on a short term basis is a storyteller, reputation guard, credibility builder and information shaper. Among responsibilities for this role, a proven ability to easily distil and communicate complex issues on a short deadline. The ideal candidate has excellent media relations skills, the ability to analyze opportunities and risks associated with media inquiries, and the strategic judgment to respond accordingly. Ability to link research information & knowledge to policy informing platforms. In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’ the Research Programmes, Units, Institutes and Centres of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) undertake policy-oriented research from its offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Our public purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.
The Publishing unit of the Human Sciences Research Council requires the services of freelancers in the various functions below. The names of successful applicants will be placed on a database, which signifies that the freelancer has been approved by HR in terms of the criteria required for the particular function and is therefore employable. It does not, however, signal the existence of a contract or even a guarantee of work. Work will be assigned directly to freelancers by the relevant Editorial Project Managers on a project-by-project basis, depending on the project requirements and freelancer availability, and will include a project specific brief. The database will be valid for the period 01 November 2023 to 31 October 2026. Time frames and remuneration will be project specific.

Freelancer - Book Cover and Marketing Designer

The Publishing unit of the Human Sciences Research Council requires a freelance designer to provide high quality book covers, among others, for its scholarly publications. In addition to the duties and requirements set out below, there may be a project-specific brief
 
Minimum Requirements

• Proven experience in the design of a range of trade, academic and scholarly book covers
• Proven experience in the design of a range of trade and academic marketing material
• A portfolio (link/as a single PDF) of relevant book cover designs and marketing material
• In your CV, include a comprehensive list of book covers that you have designed, along with the date of publication and publisher details of each.

 
Duties & Responsibilities

• Present HSRC Publishing with concepts for book covers and marketing material.
• Refine the selected concept to a neat draft, in line with the feedback provided.
• Submit neat finals for sign-off.
• Submit the deliverables as per the brief, including open files, a hi-res colour proof and/or a PDF/X-1a.

 Freelancer - Typesetter

The Publishing unit of the Human Sciences Research Council requires freelance typesetters to provide high quality typesetting of its publications and for its database. In addition to the duties set out below, there may be a project-specific brief.
 
Minimum Requirements

• Must work on a Mac or similar and in InDesign (CS5 or later)
• Must have proven experience in typesetting a minimum of FIVE academic books and/or scholarly books and be familiar with the conventions of setting academic indices, footnotes and figures.
• In your CV, include a comprehensive list of relevant books/journals that you have typeset, along with the publisher details.
• In your CV, list all the formats you work in as well as the version you use, for example, InDesign, Quark, RTF etc. as well as the relevant version.

 
Duties & Responsibilities

• Using the MSWord files supplied, set the MS according to the design specifications provided
• Take in the editor’s mark up of first pages and supply second proofs
• Take in the proof reader’s corrections on second pages and supply third proofs
• Take in the author’s corrections on third pages and supply final pages for sign off
• Supply print ready electronic files as well as open files.

• Proven experience in indexing a minimum of FIVE academic/scholarly books in the fields of the social sciences and humanities.
• In your CV, include a comprehensive list of relevant books/journals that you have indexed along with the publisher details.
• A tertiary qualification in any of the following: humanities, social sciences, economics, hard sciences or information sciences.
• Attach examples of three indexes that you’ve completed as PDFs.

Using the PDF of the manuscript as supplied, the indexer must compile a single or double index as relevant, with one level of subentry, in MSWord format. Other details will be specified in the brief.
