THE ENTITY The entity is responsible for the management of nature conservation within the Province of KwaZulu-Natal including protected areas as well as development and promotion of ecotourism and facilities within the protected areas. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife wishes to appoint a suitable candidate into the position of Maintenance Manager. PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To provide an effective and efficient maintenance support service to the resort through the design and implementation of a preventative maintenance plan. PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Social Ecologist – Research and Assessments will be part of a team of ecologists and technicians dedicated to ensuring that conservation management decisions in KwaZulu-Natal are based on sound ecological principles and evidence from solid scientific data and information. The ecologist will provide social-ecological advice and information to ensure that suitable indigenous resources in KZN, both within and out of protected areas, is wise, sustainable, and appropriate. The ecologist will be part of a team that undertakes conservation research and contribute to ongoing monitoring to understand the state of biodiversity in the province. AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY With a dedicated social ecologist, the position will cover all social elements of research and monitoring in and outside protected areas. Based in Durban or Pietermaritzburg, the area of responsibility of the social ecologist is all social-related aspects in the province. The focus will be on undertaking research and monitoring Ezemvelo’s interaction with communities surrounding protected areas. QUALIFICATION REQUIRED Minimum of a Master’s degree in social sciences, Ecology, or a related field. Valid Code B Driver’s License. EXPERIENCE A good track record with at least seven (7) years of experience in social-ecological sciences is essential, with a focus on community research and understanding of biodiversity conservation desirable. Experience in programme management and staff/student supervision is required. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS • Conduct general social ecology research and analysis methodologies in this field • Facilitate and supervise priority research, surveys, and monitoring, focusing on supporting management decision-making. • Compile social-ecological sections of the regulatory documents, including EIAs, etc. • Develop a social ecology monitoring plan as part of the state of biodiversity reporting. • Supervise (set work programs and priorities) and support staff development (mentoring and training facilitation). • Produce data reports, information syntheses and peer-review publications. • Source and interpret data and information to support managers and policymakers. • Promote scientific studies that enhance understanding of social ecology in conservation. • Budget Management. COMPETENCIES REQUIRED • Competent ecologist with good communication, interpersonal and management skills. • Computer literacy – Microsoft Office (Competence in GIS would be an advantage). • Strong organizational ability and planning skills. • Strong mentoring, training, and motivational skills. • Ability to interpret research findings through reports, presentations, and publications. • Knowledge of legislation on conservation and community-based environments.
