THE ENTITY The entity is responsible for the management of nature conservation within the Province of KwaZulu-Natal including protected areas as well as development and promotion of ecotourism and facilities within the protected areas. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife wishes to appoint a suitable candidate into the position of Chief Research Technician North West. PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To perform technical tasks, including the collection, analysis and management of biological data, report writing, undertaking environmental assessments, and maintenance of infrastructure and equipment, required by the Ecological Advice section to support nature conservation in the region. The post reports to the District Ecologist. AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY The incumbent will be based in Ithala Game Reserve near Vryheid and service the needs of the protected areas (State, private and communal) and biodiversity conservation generally in the Zululand and Amajuba District Municipalities of KZN. QUALIFICATION REQUIRED: Minimum of National Diploma: Nature Conservation B Tech or Degree in Biological Sciences will be an advantage A valid code B Driver’s license EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 3 years field experience in biological research, ecological advice and/or conservation management KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS: • Field data collection, curation and analysis, including planning and undertaking aerial game counts, alien species surveys and vegetation assessments • Administrative, technical and logistical support, including basic vehicle, equipment and infrastructure maintenance • Compliance with all relevant legislation • Living and promoting the Ezemvelo values • Data interpretation and information sharing • Provide environmental awareness, education, mentoring and training to staff and the public • Effective supervision of other technical staff COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: • Good understanding of scientific method and research and monitoring protocols and methods • Biodiversity knowledge (species identification, ecosystem functioning) • Conservation knowledge • Environmental legislation and standards knowledge • Good skills and extensive experience in GIS software and spatial data analysis • Good interpersonal and technical skills DIRECTIONS TO APPLYING CANDIDATES: The following mandatory documents must be submitted: a) Fully completed EKZNW Application Form (available from www.kznwildlife.com). b) Certified copies of your qualifications, Identity Document (ID) and valid Driver`s License. REGIONAL ECOLOGIST MARINE – OFFSHORE SCIENTIST (Production) Grade C EAST REGION POST NO. 520909 TOTAL REMUNERATION PACKAGE: R 809 634p.a. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife wishes to appoint a suitable candidate into the position of Regional Ecologist Marine – Offshore. PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Regional Ecologist Marine – Offshore will be part of a team dedicated to ensuring that marine conservation management decisions in KwaZulu-Natal are based on sound ecological principles and are founded on best available scientific information. The marine Ecological Advice team provides scientific advice to support the management of biodiversity. It conducts research and monitoring to address key management issues, acts as a bridge between science and management by sourcing and interpreting scientific information for managers and policy-makers, identifies and prioritizes research needs, and facilitates activities of external scientists. AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY In the absence of a dedicated Inshore Ecologist, the Regional Ecologist – Offshore position will cover both inshore and offshore marine ecosystems. Based in Durban, the area of responsibility of the Regional Ecologist is all marine systems between the high-water mark and 200 nautical miles offshore (EEZ), along the entire length of the KwaZulu-Natal coast. However, a large focus will be in MPAs. QUALIFICATION REQUIRED: • A minimum of an MSc degree in MARINE BIOLOGY or ECOLOGY or related field. • A valid code B Drivers license. EXPERIENCE: A good track record with at least 7 years experience in the field of marine science is essential, with application to marine conservation desirable. Experience in programme management and staff/student supervision is required. KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS: • Contribute to development of marine protected area management plans and focal species management plans. • Facilitate and supervise priority research, surveys and monitoring, especially with a focus on supporting management decision making. • Source and interpret scientific information to support managers and policy makers. • Supervise and contribute to staff development • Develop and maintain biodiversity databases and spatial information systems. • Produce data reports, information syntheses and publications. • Promote scientific studies that enhance understanding of ecosystem functioning. • Facilitate or contribute to development of policies and strategic plans to address biodiversity problems and promote management effectiveness. • Contribute to coastal policy and planning initiatives. • Contribute to EIA processes. • Budget Management. COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: • Competent ecologist with good communication, inter-personal and management skills. • Computer literacy – Microsoft Office (Competence in GIS would be an advantage). • Strong organizational ability and planning skills. • Strong mentoring, training, and motivational skills. • Ability to interpret research findings through reports, presentations, and publications. • Knowledge of legislation pertaining to marine and coastal environments. • Competent SCUBA diver.
