THE COMPETITION TRIBUNAL (Established by the Competition Act No. 89 of 1998) The Competition Tribunal was established in terms of the Competition Act No. 89 of 1998. It is responsible for adjudicating prohibited practice and merger cases. In terms of section 35 of the Competition Act, 1998, the Chairperson of the Competition Tribunal hereby invites applications for the following position in the Tribunal (Pretoria). SENIOR COMPETITION LAW COUNSEL Total Cost to Company Annual Salary starting at R1 944 682 (Negotiable with experience) This is an exciting opportunity to develop real experience at the cutting edge of substantive competition law or economic regulatory issues and legal procedure. The work of the Competition Tribunal covers nearly every aspect of competition litigation, including hearing and deciding matters referred to it by the Competition Commission or by private parties which acts as the ‘prosecutor’ in the system or referred privately by third parties. Reporting to the Deputy Chairperson the candidate will be required to work directly with Tribunal Members in facilitating the adjudicative role of the Competition Tribunal. This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding lawyer to develop real experience at the cutting edge of both substantive competition law and legal procedure. Key Responsibilities Working directly with Tribunal panels and Tribunal Members, the role shall include, but not limited to the following duties: Research case law and produce written analyses; Prepare drafts and written materials on legal issues; and Attend hearings and assist on issues as required. Qualifications and experience The successful candidate must be an admitted attorney or advocate with at least 15 years’ post admission experience. be an experienced competition lawyer and a team player, capable of handling procedural matters and analysing competition law or economic and regulatory issues raised in both prohibited practices and mergers. have high standard of oral and written communication skills as well as an ability to work under pressure as will be expected. have practical experience of competition law, combined with an understanding of economic regulatory issues. Candidates with a strong practical background in related areas of litigation (including in administrative law and commercial law) may be considered.
