EMPLOYEE RELATIONS SPECIALIST
Position Status: Permanent
Location: Head Office (Pretoria)
Reporting Line: Human Resources Manager
Overall Job Purpose: To ensure that the Council for Geoscience (CGS) work environment is conducive to harmonious employer-employee relationships through the execution of sound labour relations practices. The incumbent is responsible for designing, developing and implementing proactive employer/employee relationship processes, systems and tools that enable the achievement of HR and CGS’s overarching strategic goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in developing and formulating of relevant ER policies and procedures, and enforcing same across CGS Divisions and BU’s.
- Partnering with Business Managers to manage all ER matters with employees ensuring sound resolution thereof in the best interests of the Company.
- Manage the employer /employee relationship (industrial relations function) according to the Labour Relations Act and other relevant legislation, policies and procedures
- Provide guidance and advice to both managers and employees on implementation of relevant labour legislations and the internal CGS disciplinary code.
- Provide sound advice to the HR Manager and line managers in respect of procedural and substantive fairness issues.
- Implement and maintain a comprehensive IR administration system.
- Facilitate the consistent, fair and equitable handling of disciplinary, grievance, collective bargaining, and dispute resolution matters.
- Represent the company at the CCMA in Conciliations and Arbitrations.
- Manage and deliver IR related training, including Chairpersons training
- Monitor trends in the CGS’s employee relations indicators, and make recommendations to the HR Manager.
- Manage the integration of good employee relations to other key HR processes.
- Facilitate the training for CGS line managers and staff on policies, processes, systems and best-practices relating to employee relations.
- Coordinate the implementation and compliance of the Employment Equity Act and compile a yearly EE plan for the organization.
- Monitor and ensure compliance across CGS divisions of applicable labour legislation.
- Conduct research on leading practices and benchmark CGS against “best-in-class” organisations in respect of employee relations processes and systems.
- Gather data/information, analyze it, and transform it into “business intelligence” that can be used for reporting purposes.
- Representing the Company at the CCMA as and when necessary.
- Effective handling of all Union matters, inclusive of disputes, relations management and communication.
- Monthly reporting on all ER matters across business, inclusive of analysing and identifying trends.
- Attending to any special projects within Human Resources as and when requested.
KEY PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Knowledge of policy development and implementation methodologies
- Extensive knowledge of Human Resources principles and policies
- Sound knowledge of Labour Relations Act, relevant legislations
- Knowledge and experience in dispute resolution and wage negotiations
- Knowledge and experience in handling disciplinary cases and grievances

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Post Graduate Degree in Human Resources Management or equivalent.
- Minimum 10 years related experience in HR of which 5 years must be Employee/Industrial Relations experience.
- Experience and proven track record at the CCMA.
