HSC is looking to appoint a suitably qualified individual to take on the responsibilities of a PhD Research Intern. The successful incumbents will be based either in the HSRC Durban; Pretoria or Cape Town office. PhD RESEARCH INTERN X1 position Ref: HSC/PhD/10/20 The HSC division has a PhD Research Internship that is currently available for occupation. The PhD Research Intern Programme in the HSRC provides the successful candidate with an opportunity to further develop their research expertise by working with research subject experts and project specialists. The research internship experience is intensive and seeks a mature individual who is able to work independently as well as part of a team. While appointee will be exposed to a wide variety of project-related research, she/he will be expected to complete their thesis within three years. Time is set aside for this purpose of degree completion. Job Functions: Research Industries: Research Specification In addition to being registered for a PhD degree in a recognised South African university and currently working on the PhD degree, the research intern is required to participate in all aspects of the research process as they work with other staff on different research projects.
Among other duties, the successful incumbent will participate in the following activities under supervision: •The conceptualisation of projects; •The formulation of research questions and writing of funding proposals; •The submission of research proposals for ethical review; •Implementation of research projects and policy dialogues; •Collection and analysis of data; •Write-up of research findings including research reports, conference presentations, policy briefs, and manuscripts for journal publication; •Assist with project management and administration. Requirements •Have graduated with a Master’s degree and is already registered for a PhD in the Social Sciences/Humanities or a relevant field at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa; •The successful applicant must be a South African or South African after naturalisation •Computer literacy including MS Office and appropriate software packages, including MS Excel, MS Access, SPSS or Stata or SAS; •Good planning and organisational skills, including the ability to working well under pressure; •Good communication skills (verbal as well as report writing); •A sound conceptual grounding in a discipline and in quantitative or qualitative research methods; •Be able to operate within very tight deadlines; •Be prepared to work as part of multi-year, multi-institutional partnership projects between the HSRC, government departments, universities and other partners.
