FILM AND PUBLICATION BOARD (FPB)
 
The Film and Publication Board (FPB) is a statutory body, with its main task being the classification of films, videos, DVDs, computer games and certain publications, including online content for their suitable age viewership. Our mission is to "ensure the regulation of media entertainment content by empowering the public, contributing to child protection and promoting industry growth".
 

​INVITATION FOR NOMINATION OF CLASSIFIERS
 
TARGETED SELECTION
 
The Council of the Film and Publication Board invites nominations or self-nominated South African citizens residing in Gauteng to serve on the Film and Publication Board as Classifiers. The FPB Council appoints Classifiers to classify content in terms of the Films and Publications Act, seeks to appoint a pool of Classifiers reflective of the diversity of South African society as follows:

• 1 White Classifier, must be proficient in Afrikaans.
• 1 Coloured Classifier to represent the Coloured communities and culture in South Africa.
• 1 Indian Classifier to represent the Indian communities and culture in South Africa. (Languages – Tamil, Hindi and Uru)

 
Requirements:

• A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 7) and/or work experience in relevant fields, including the following:
  • Arts and culture;
  • Social, Legal, Psychological or Educational services;
  • Experience working with children, women, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups;
  • Advocacy and community services;
  • Media or Film/Television;
• Knowledge on FPB Legislation, Regulations and Guidelines.
• Ability to interpret and apply relevant Legislation
• Excellent report writing skills
• A good understanding of visual and audiovisual media, and converging technology
• Prior experience in advanced-level gaming would be an advantage
• Excellent analytical skills
• High levels of personal and professional integrity and work ethics
• A broad understanding of South African constitutional principles
• Other language (local and foreign) proficiency, will be an advantage

 
In addition, successful candidates may be appointed as Chief Classifiers and should have good facilitation, people management and leadership skills.
 
Duties:

• Travel to cinema/theatre venues to view content       
• View content (online/physical) submitted to the FPB for classification
• Classify viewed content in line with the FPB Classification Guidelines
• Write Classification reports detailing the reasons for the classification rating and               consumer advice decision 
• Attend mandatory training/workshops and debriefing sessions as arranged by the FPB

Please note:

• Successful Classifiers will serve for a three-year period on an independent consultancy basis. 
• Classification work includes virtual/online viewing of content and/or physical viewing at cinema/theatre venues in Johannesburg and Pretoria. 
• Remuneration rates applicable: R339/hr for Chief Classifiers and R289/hr for Classifiers for time worked, reviewed annually as per the National Treasury directive.
• Applicants will be subject to credential verification and security vetting.
• Current Classifiers and applicants may not re-apply for this post.
• Classifiers will have to view explicit and distressing content and will have to attend regular, compulsory debriefing sessions.
